Job Description

Civil Litigation Lawyer

Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner

£56,133 - £66,648 Northampton Hybrid & Flexible Working

This is a genuinely distinctive opportunity for an experienced civil litigator to join a newly formed in-house legal team serving Northamptonshire's Police, Fire and Rescue Service, and the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.

The Role

You will manage a caseload of civil litigation matters including claims for false imprisonment, misfeasance, malicious prosecution, wrongful arrest, occupational stress, and road traffic incidents, alongside the risk management considerations that arise from these.

You'll manage claims from pre-action through to resolution, advising on both legal risk and wider organisational impact.

There's no expectation to undertake advocacy, but if you want exposure to hearings such as case management or disclosure applications, that door is open.

Importantly, you won't be working alone. A dedicated civil investigator and two experienced paralegals handle the groundwork, and caseloads are actively managed. Overflow work is outsourced rather than pushed back into the team.

Why join

  • You'll be joining at an early stage, with genuine influence over how the function develops
  • You'll work closely with senior leadership, including exposure to Gold Command
  • The role offers high levels of flexibility for the right candidate

About You

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or CILEx Fellow
  • Strong background in defendant litigation (public liability or similar)
  • Comfortable managing complex, sensitive matters with sound judgement

What's on Offer

  • Salary: £56,133 - £66,648
  • Hybrid working (typically 2 days on-site in Northampton)
  • Flexitime with TOIL accrued above 37 hours
  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • 25 days' annual leave, rising to 30 with service
  • Free on-site parking
