Before You Apply

To be considered for this Finance Manager role, you need to be a qualified accountant (ACA or CIMA), have at least 5 years' experience as a Finance Manager or Financial Controller in a similar sized construction or contracting environment, and have hands on experience with Sage 50 Cloud Professional. You will also need a working knowledge of the VAT reverse charge (DRC) procedure and be able to work Monday to Friday, office based. If you can't answer yes to all of these, please don't apply, as we won't be able to progress your application.

The Role

A highly established construction company is looking for an experienced Finance Manager to take charge of all financial and accounting operations, from month end and management accounts through to statutory year end accounts. You will report to the Managing Director and work closely with the company accountants, auditors and senior leadership team, while supervising the Accounts Assistant. This is a crucial finance leadership role with a broad remit, and it suits a proactive, commercially aware accountant who is confident managing people, financial processes and construction accounting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Purchase Ledger and Accounts Payable - overseeing invoice processing by the Accounts Assistant, including subcontractor invoices with CIS deductions, reconciling supplier statements, and raising payments in line with terms and the Managing Director's requirements
  • Sales Ledger, Accounts Receivable and Credit Control - checking sales invoices are correct and timely, raising monthly applications for payment alongside the QS, chasing payment following project valuations, and making sure retentions are released on time
  • Job Costing and Contract Accounting - checking that all costs are covered by the applications and providing monthly job costing analysis
  • Compliance - preparing CIS and VAT returns, and implementing and following the new reverse VAT (DRC) procedure
  • Reconciliations and Controls - bank and balance sheet reconciliations, general ledger controls, and a system of financial controls over accounting transactions
  • Month End and Year End - preparing management accounts, financial statements and balance sheets for the accountants' audit, and providing the information the auditors need
  • Reporting - monthly cash flow reporting and forecasting to the Managing Director, plus management cost reports and financial analysis as required

You will also look after fixed asset schedules and depreciation, prepayments and accruals, and petty cash, and keep the finance department running in an orderly way. You will be able to cover the Accounts Assistant's role during absences, and support the Managing Director in overseeing all areas of finance, flagging key issues clearly and concisely.

About You

  • At least 5 years' proven experience in a Finance Manager or Financial Controller position within a similar sized construction or contracting business
  • Qualified accountant, ACA or CIMA
  • Proficient in Sage 50 Cloud Professional accounting software
  • High level of IT literacy across Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook and Excel
  • Working knowledge of the reverse VAT (DRC) procedure and CIS
  • Experience supervising and managing staff in an office or finance team environment
  • Knowledge of Cypher is preferred, although training will be given

Beyond the technical requirements, you will be highly organised with excellent attention to detail, able to manage multiple workstreams and work to strict deadlines, at times under pressure. You take ownership of tasks and follow through to completion, and you are comfortable solving problems independently as well as being part of a senior team. Strong telephone skills are important for effective credit control and resolving customer and supplier queries, and you will be confidential, reliable, positive and flexible.
