A specialist school in Chippenham, Wiltshire is seeking a patient, compassionate and dedicated Autism Support Worker to join their team and provide tailored support to children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and additional needs.

As an Autism Support Worker, you will work closely with children to understand their individual communication styles, sensory needs, interests, strengths and challenges. You will provide consistent, child-centred support that helps children feel safe, understood and able to engage with their education.

The Role

As an Autism Support Worker, your responsibilities will include:

• Providing 1:1 and small-group support to autistic children within the school environment.
• Supporting children with communication, social interaction and emotional regulation.
• Helping children manage sensory needs and supporting them to access appropriate sensory strategies.
• Providing reassurance and guidance during periods of anxiety, distress or dysregulation.
• Supporting children to follow routines and transitions throughout the school day.
• Encouraging independence with learning, communication and everyday activities.
• Supporting positive behaviour through calm, consistent and individualised approaches.
• Helping children develop confidence, self-esteem and social skills.
• Supporting children during classroom activities, break times, lunchtime and other less structured parts of the school day.
• Working alongside specialist teachers and SEN professionals to implement individualised support strategies.

The successful Autism Support Worker will play an important role in creating a calm, structured and inclusive environment where children are encouraged to communicate, participate and develop at their own pace.

About You

We are looking for an Autism Support Worker who is:

• Patient, empathetic and genuinely passionate about supporting autistic children.
• Calm and consistent when responding to children's individual needs.
• Confident building positive and trusting relationships with children.
• Interested in understanding autism, sensory processing, communication and child development.
• Able to adapt their approach to suit different communication and learning styles.
• Observant and able to recognise changes in a child's behaviour, mood or emotional state.
• A strong communicator who can work effectively as part of a wider support team.
• Resilient and able to maintain a positive approach in challenging situations.
• Previous experience supporting autistic children or young people is beneficial but not essential.

Experience as a Teaching Assistant, SEN Teaching Assistant, Support Worker, Care Worker, Youth Worker or Autism Support Worker would be advantageous, although applications are welcomed from graduates and individuals looking to begin a career in specialist education and support.
