Consultant Colorectal Surgeon-Interest in Pelvic Floor Disorders & IBD

This newly created consultant post offers an exceptional opportunity to join one of the UK's leading tertiary colorectal units and to play a central role in the continued development of specialist benign colorectal services. The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of high-quality elective and emergency colorectal surgery while helping to shape the future direction of pelvic floor disorders, inflammatory bowel disease across the Trust.

Applicants should have broad experience in the management of benign colorectal disease and advanced lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, including expert diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy, urgent suspected colorectal cancer (Two-Week Wait) referrals, advanced polypectomy and the management of complex colorectal polyps. Candidates with a strong interest and expertise in pelvic floor disorders, anophysiology and inflammatory bowel disease are particularly encouraged to apply and will be expected to contribute to the continued development of these multidisciplinary tertiary referral services.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will work within a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team alongside consultant colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, gastrointestinal physiologists, radiologists, specialist nurses, oncologists and allied health professionals. There will be opportunities to lead service development, quality improvement, innovation and research within King's Health Partners.

The post is based primarily at King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill, with cross-site outpatient, endoscopy and operating commitments at the Princess Royal University Hospital and other Trust sites as service development requires. The successful candidate will participate fully in both the Colorectal Consultant on-call rota and the Emergency General Surgery and Major Trauma on-call rota.

Applicants must hold full registration with the General Medical Council and be on the GMC Specialist Register in General Surgery (or be within six months of obtaining CCT or CESR at the time of interview). Candidates should have comprehensive training in General and Colorectal Surgery, Level III colorectal training, laparoscopic expertise and independent JAG-accredited lower gastrointestinal endoscopy practice.

Job responsibilities

1. Provide a high quality care service to patients, including all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group.
2. Share responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis, and cover colleagues' periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
3. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
4. Carry out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
5. Be responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Groups management team where part of the service structure.
6. Contribute to the Care Groups research interests in accordance with the Trust's R&D framework.
7. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
8. Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan, including assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
9. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for services.
10. Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty, fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that post-qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
11. Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced, including involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues.
12. Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
13. Be aware of and comply with all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
14. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in a manner consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
15. King's is committed to providing consultant-led 7-day services, and in the event of future developments the post holder would be expected to contribute equally with other consultant colleagues.

Person Specification Qualifications & Higher Qualifications

• Full GMC Registration Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date within 6 months of interview
• FRCS or equivalent
• Appropriate higher general surgical/colorectal surgical qualification

Registration

• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date within 6 months of interview

Training and Experience

• Wide clinical training and experience in General Surgery with Level III training in Colorectal Surgery
• Laparoscopic experience in General Surgery and Colorectal Surgery
• Independent practice in endoscopy

Administration

• Experience in day-to-day organisation of services in a busy Teaching Hospital
• Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes

Management and Leadership

• Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams

Research & publications

• Experience of clinical research. Publication of relevant review articles or case reports
• Relevant research experience in one or more aspects of colorectal surgery. Higher research degree (MD/PhD)

Personal skills & Personal attributes

• Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and cooperate with all medical and paramedical staff
