Pest Control Technician - Team Leader

Pay Rate: 22.54 per hour PAYE / 29.42 per hour Umbrella
Hours: 8am - 5pm, Monday to Friday

About the Role
Barking & Dagenham Council are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Pest Control Technician - Team Leader to oversee and coordinate their borough-wide pest control services. This is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced pest control professional with strong leadership skills, expert technical knowledge, and a passion for delivering high-quality public services.
In this frontline role, you will supervise a team of Pest Control Technicians, manage stock and equipment, oversee service delivery, and carry out specialist pest control treatments across domestic and commercial settings. You will also play a key part in developing the service, ensuring compliance with legislation, and maintaining the highest health and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, supervise, and coordinate a team of Pest Control Technicians delivering services across the borough.
- Carry out surveys and treatments for rodent, insect, and avian pests in line with BPCA standards and Council service requirements.
- Allocate daily workloads based on appointments and service requests received from the call centre.
- Manage pest control stores, including stock allocation, ordering supplies, and maintaining accurate inventory records.
- Respond to customer enquiries, complaints, and service requests, ensuring high-quality communication and customer care.
- Produce pest control guidance, fact sheets, and information for residents, businesses, and internal teams.
- Conduct risk assessments, COSHH assessments, and health and safety inspections for the service.
- Undertake complex or specialist pest control treatments, including the safe use of air firearms and ensuring appropriate liaison with the Metropolitan Police.
- Maintain records of all work using relevant property database systems.
- Ensure safe maintenance, storage, and allocation of all pest control equipment, PPE, chemicals, and firearms.
- Work in challenging environments, including lofts, confined spaces, watercourses, and verminous areas.
- Carry out pest proofing, fumigation, and emergency call-out work as required.
- Support development and promotion of the pest control service alongside the Commercial Services Business Team.
Management Responsibilities
- Direct line management of five Pest Control Technicians.
- Supervise contractors delivering pest control or related works.
- Set objectives, conduct appraisals, manage attendance, wellbeing, performance, recruitment, and training.
- Foster teamwork, innovation, and continuous improvement within the service.
- Ensure confidentiality, professionalism, and adherence to Council policies at all times.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- RSPH Level 2 in Pest Management (or equivalent).
- At least 10 years' field experience in pest control.
- Strong technical knowledge of rodent and insect pests, treatment methods, legislation, COSHH, risk assessments, and site surveys.
- Experience leading or supervising a pest control team.
- Pest Control Air Weapon Licence (or willingness to obtain).
- Full UK driving licence.
- Experience working with BPCA standards and delivering high-risk treatments.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to work at height, in confined spaces, and in environments exposed to pests and potential infection risk.
- Willingness to work out of hours as required (TOIL/overtime applies).
- Up-to-date vaccinations, training, and health screening due to exposure risk.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise effectively with residents, businesses, elected Members, and partner services.
