Firearms Enquiry Officers required - Devon and Cornwall

We are recruiting for Firearms Enquiry Officer to undertake enquiries to support the effective control of firearms and ammunition to ensure public safety and full compliance with legislation, Home Office directives and Force policy.

  • 1 Full Time or Part Time role based within D&C
  • 1 Part Time role based in Blandford (Dorset)

Main Responsibilities;

  • Undertake visits to applicants' premises to ensure appropriately secure firearms and ammunition storage and that the premises are suitably secure, providing crime prevention advice to minimise the potential theft and misuse of firearms and ammunition.
  • Interview applicants, paying particular attention to family circumstances, the level of domestic harmony, personal habits, especially possible domestic, drink or drugs abuse, and any other factor that may raise concerns over the suitability of the applicant to hold a firearms certificate.
  • Make decisions as to whether a certificate should be approved, clearly identifying areas of concern, and where appropriate, advising Force colleagues or other partner agencies.
  • Manage an appointments diary for visiting and interviewing applicants or for viewing their premises, seeking to meet the needs of the applicant as much as possible.
  • Ensure that known changes in existing certificate holders' circumstances that may impact on their suitability to continue to hold a firearms certificate are verified, considered fully and appropriate action taken to address any potential problem or to diminish risk.
  • Seek to establish an effective relationship with certificate holders so as to build trust and to maximise the possibility of providing information on illegal use of firearms and ammunition.
  • Interview suspects where certificate conditions have been breached, and, where appropriate produce a statement, prepare case files for potential prosecution and attend court as required.

To Be successful

  • Significant investigative experience over a sustained period
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office applications.
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to interrogate computer systems and draw information.
  • Working knowledge of firearms legislation and current working practices is desirable (willingness to be trained is essential).
