Independent Forgings and Alloys (IFA) is one of the UK's leading independent aerospace and industrial forgers. The unique feature about IFA is the combination of open and closed-die forging while also undertaking the whole production process from raw material to the finished product in one location. Operating from a ft2 facility in Sheffield, we manufacture high-integrity, open-die and closed-die forged components in nickel alloy, titanium, stainless steel and carbon alloys for customers and tier-one suppliers within the aerospace, nuclear, power generation, marine as well as oil and gas sector.

What is a Forge Process Operator?

A Forge Process Operator is able to operate different forge machines such as presses, hammers, ring rollers, GFM, drop stamps and precision small screw presses to safely and efficiently produce precision forgings while ensuring that quality, productivity and delivery targets are met.

During your training you will learn a variety of skills:

  • How to handle hot metal safely in a closed-die and open-die hot working environment.
  • Using forging tools, equipment and machines to shape and cut metal as required.
  • Setting up and operating relevant forge machines.
  • Operating or directing operation of press, hammer and stamps as well as repositioning workpiece between strokes.
  • Positioning and directing the positioning of hot metal on anvil or other work surface.
  • Measuring and visual inspecting parts using various gauges and equipment.
  • Heating furnaces.
  • Supervising the heating in furnace of metal to be forged.
  • Loading and unloading rotary furnaces.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering documents to determine operational requirements.
  • You will be trained in Fork Lift Truck driving, Overhead Crane operation and Manual Handling as required.

Qualifications and Skills

Essential:

  • Educated to 5 GCSEs at A-C or equivalent including Maths and English.
  • Interest in working in an manufacturing environment.
  • Evidence of being able to follow instructions.
