System Architect - Weapons

Belfast/Templecombe/Glasgow, Hybrid working

Primary Purpose of the Role

Within THALES IAS we are investing heavily in refreshing our Weapon System product portfolio to meet the needs of Short Range Defence applications.

As a result there is a need for highly skilled and experienced engineers to help define and develop the technical roadmaps for our Weapon Systems.

This specialist role is focused on evolving our product roadmaps to allow remote operation over a network, including effector launch and guidance (Network Based Fire Control)

The role spans the product life-cycle from requirements analysis, through definition of the technical solution, and includes support to system development and qualification.

Key Interactions

The job-holder will work closely with the following people:

Product Management Team including Product Line Managers and Product Line Architects, and Weapon System Architects, to define Product Concepts & Development Roadmaps

Research & Technology (R&T) Team to develop plans for de-risking Technology through Self-Funded and Customer Funded Research & Development

Product/Engineering Teams to assist with refinement and implementation of product road-maps during development and qualification of Weapon System products.

Key Responsibilities:

Definition of Network Based Fire Control System architectures, including Concept of Operation, functional partitioning, and sub-system interfaces.

Customising Network Based Fire Control System architectures to meet specific customer's key requirements, timescale, and budget constraints.

Maintain an awareness of latest developments in Network Based Fire Control Technology and identify how they can be exploited in Weapon System products

Act as a technical interface and point of contact with partners and suppliers during technical road-map demonstration and de-risking activities.

Specialist Skills and Experience

Experience with remote initiator systems design and implementation covering a wide range of the product or concept development lifecycle.

Experience in the development of system architectures, safety architectures, software architectures, and communication architectures for remote initiator systems.

Practical experience of multiply diverse and/or redundant system architectures to enhance safety rating, and the ability to apply these concepts to remote initiator system solutions.

Knowledge and experience of development processes, tooling and regulatory process for high integrity safety systems.

Experience of working with safety specialists and independent safety assessors to refine safety approaches and achieve required safety ratings to meet UK MoD requirements.

General Skills and Experience

Ability to analyse system requirements, and identify requirement/technical solution trade-offs between cost, schedule, and compliance.

An effective team player who can interface with all parts of the organisation, and operate effectively with teams distributed across different sites/countries.

Comfortable with customer facing work and working with subject matter domain experts.

Good verbal communication skills, report writing skills, and presentation skills.

Strong organisational and team working skills.
