We're looking for a driven and passionate individual to join us at Which? as our Senior Data Scientist. This role offers a competitive salary, hybrid working in London, 28 days holiday a year plus Bank Holidays and 11% pension from the second year!

Which? is the UK's consumer champion, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone. Our research gets to the heart of consumer issues, our advice is impartial, and our rigorous product tests lead to expert recommendations. We're the independent consumer voice that influences politicians and lawmakers, investigates, holds businesses to account and makes change happen. As an organisation we're not for profit and all for making consumers more powerful.

Technological developments have hugely benefited consumers - but have also tipped the balance of power in favour of businesses in some cases. Our Advocacy team is key to helping us understand how markets work to shape the consumer landscape and to ensure those markets deliver positive outcomes for consumers. Some of our recent work in digital markets includes demonstrating the scale and harm of fake reviews leading to government action, looking at the value of giving consumers greater control over their data, launching campaign asking the government to put the right regulations in place to make online platforms take responsibility to protect consumers online, and successfully campaigning for the inclusion of digital advertising in the online safety bill.

Now we're looking forward to building on this success by adding data science capabilities to our team, helping us dig deeper into digital markets and offering new insights and evidence to hold government, businesses and regulators to account.

What you'll be doing?

As a Data Scientist at Which? Advocacy Group you will deliver benefits for UK consumers by helping Which? to advocate for ambitious change in business practices and government policy and regulation in digital markets to tackle the harm that consumers face online.

As a founding member of our data science team, sitting alongside economists, data analysts, policy and external affairs experts, social researchers, and campaigners, you will help us identify the harm consumers are facing, and shape innovative solutions. You will be responsible for identifying and delivering innovative projects where we can use machine learning models and broader data science techniques to help us to uncover and tackle consumer harm. You will also develop effective relationships with external data science experts and identify possible opportunities for collaboration to deliver our purpose.

You will also:
  • Identify and generate relevant datasets, design appropriate analysis methodologies and implement those, while maintaining high standards of rigour and clear documentation to allow replication.
  • Work with the rest of the advocacy team to identify possible technological solutions to tackle consumer detriment and improve consumer outcomes in key sectors of the economy.
  • Communicate our analysis and solutions to non-technical internal and external audiences, including senior stakeholders, in a clear and persuasive way.
  • Manage and deliver a wide range of high-quality consumer and policy research projects
  • Keep abreast of new developments in machine learning and data science techniques and approaches used in the private sector to bring this know-how into Which? to influence our policy and advocacy work.

What you will bring?

You will have:
  • A Masters degree (or equivalent) in a computer science subject, or equivalent experience working in data science
  • A strong knowledge of machine learning methods and tools including data extraction, data manipulation, model fitting and evaluation, and experience in applying machine learning models to business problems.
  • A strong knowledge of wider data science including, but not limited to, data acquisition (e.g. web scraping), statistical methods, network analysis and data visualisation and experience in applying those to business problems.
  • Strong experience of coding in Python or R, specifically for data science or a related field.
  • Knowledge of data engineering tools and techniques, such as cloud services (e.g. AWS, Azure), implementations of data models (e.g. SQL and NoSQL solutions), and version control (e.g. Git)
  • Experience in developing constructive and collaborative working relationships with experts in other disciplines to deliver successful projects.
  • Clear verbal and written communication including to non-technical audiences
