Job description

A growing UK cancer charity is seeking an experienced Finance Manager to join its team on an initial 12-month fixed-term contract, working 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours per week), with the potential for the role to become permanent.

The charity is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by cancer, with a particular focus on funding life-changing research, raising awareness and advocating for improvements in diagnosis, treatment and care. With ambitious plans for the future, the organisation is entering an exciting period of growth and development as it prepares to deliver its new five-year strategy.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small but ambitious charity at a pivotal stage in its development, as it transitions from an outsourced finance model to a fully in-house finance function.

Reporting to the Director of Finance & Resources, this is a broad, hands-on role combining day-to-day financial management, management accounting, business partnering and process improvement. You'll take ownership of core finance operations while helping to shape and embed new processes, systems and ways of working.

The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys working in a smaller organisation, is comfortable rolling up their sleeves and is motivated by the opportunity to make a tangible difference.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Take ownership of day-to-day finance operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial processing and reporting.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, budgets, forecasts and cash flow reporting.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end processes, including reconciliations, statutory accounts and audit preparation.
  • Partner with budget holders and senior stakeholders, providing financial insight and practical support.
  • Maintain strong financial controls, compliance and charity fund accounting, including restricted funds.
  • Support the transition from outsourced to in-house finance operations.
  • Identify and implement improvements to finance processes, reporting and automation, making better use of Xero.
  • Take on increasing management responsibilities as the charity grows and the finance function develops.

You will:

  • Be a qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent), or qualified by experience (QBE).
  • Have strong experience working within a small or medium-sized charity, with a broad understanding of charity finance operations.
  • Have hands-on experience producing management accounts, budgets, forecasts and year-end accounts.
  • Have a strong understanding of Charity SORP, fund accounting and restricted funds.
  • Be an experienced user of Xero, including its reporting functionality. This is essential.
  • Have experience maintaining financial controls, completing reconciliations and supporting statutory audits.
  • Ideally have experience improving finance systems, processes and automation.
  • Be confident partnering with non-finance colleagues and communicating financial information clearly.
  • Be proactive, adaptable and comfortable working independently within a small team.

What's on offer:

  • £45,000-£50,000 FTE, pro rata for 0.6 FTE.
  • Initial 12-month fixed-term contract, with potential to become permanent.
  • 0.6 FTE (22.5 hours per week), with flexibility to spread hours across three or more days.
  • Hybrid working, ideally with one day per week in the London office.
  • Opportunity to play a key role in developing an in-house finance function and supporting an ambitious charity through its next phase of growth.
