Job Description

R&D Tax Manager - Accountancy Practice

Keighley / Skipton, West Yorkshire £40,000 - £60,000 Hybrid Working Available

An established and growing independent accountancy practice in West Yorkshire is looking to recruit an experienced R&D Tax Manager to join its specialist Research & Development Tax team.

This is an excellent opportunity for an R&D tax professional with a strong background in accountancy practice who enjoys working directly with clients, managing claims from start to finish and providing technically sound advice on R&D tax relief.

The firm has an established R&D department which continues to experience increased demand for its services. As a result, they are looking to strengthen the team with an experienced individual who can take ownership of client assignments and play an important role in the continued development of the department.

The position would suit someone who is technically confident, comfortable managing their own workload and keen to join a smaller, supportive practice where they can make a genuine contribution.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage R&D tax relief claims from initial client discussions and eligibility assessments through to preparation, submission and completion.
  • Work closely with clients to understand their businesses, technical projects and qualifying research and development activities.
  • Conduct detailed client interviews to gather the technical and financial information required to support R&D claims.
  • Prepare comprehensive technical reports, project narratives, financial calculations and supporting documentation in accordance with HMRC requirements.
  • Review qualifying expenditure and ensure claims are accurately calculated, appropriately evidenced and compliant with current R&D tax legislation.
  • Act as a key point of contact for clients throughout the claims process, providing regular updates and practical advice.
  • Liaise directly with HMRC, responding to enquiries, compliance checks and requests for additional information.
  • Manage disputed or rejected claims, preparing appropriate responses and supporting clients through established appeal procedures where necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the R&D and wider accountancy practice teams to ensure clients receive a joined-up service.
  • Keep up to date with developments in R&D tax legislation, HMRC guidance and compliance requirements.

Experience and qualifications

  • At least 3 years' experience preparing and managing R&D tax relief claims within an accountancy practice environment.
  • A strong technical understanding of UK R&D tax legislation, qualifying activities, eligible expenditure and HMRC reporting requirements.
  • Proven experience managing R&D claims independently, including preparing technical narratives, financial calculations and supporting documentation.
  • Experience liaising directly with HMRC and responding to enquiries or challenges relating to R&D claims.
  • Confident communicating with clients, asking detailed technical questions and translating complex information into clear, accurate written reports.
  • Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple client assignments and deadlines.
  • A professional, personable approach with the confidence to develop and maintain strong client relationships.
  • Relevant tax, accountancy or technical qualifications would be advantageous, although practical R&D claims experience and technical knowledge are particularly important.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary of £40,000 - £60,000, negotiable depending on experience.
  • 25 days' annual leave.
  • Company pension scheme.
  • Opportunity for up to 2 days working from home each week, subject to agreement.
  • Monday to Friday working hours, 9am-5pm.
  • Opportunity to join an established and growing specialist R&D tax department.
  • Varied and technically interesting work, with responsibility for managing client assignments from start to finish.
  • The chance to take ownership of your work and make a meaningful contribution within an independent accountancy practice.

Company culture

This is a well-established independent accountancy practice which is continuing to grow and invest in its specialist services.

With a close-knit team and an expanding R&D department, the firm can offer an environment where individuals are trusted to manage their responsibilities, build relationships directly with clients and contribute to the wider success of the business.

Unlike a larger corporate environment, this opportunity offers the chance to become an important part of a specialist team, with plenty of variety, autonomy and direct involvement in client work.

The firm is particularly interested in speaking with experienced R&D professionals who enjoy the technical side of their work, take pride in delivering a high-quality service and are looking for a long-term opportunity within a growing practice.
