Job Description

About the Role

A leading organisation within the UK renewable energy sector is seeking an experienced Electrical Lead to take ownership of the electrical function across the business, with a primary focus on utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects.

This is a senior leadership position, responsible for setting electrical standards, providing technical direction, and developing the company's electrical and commissioning capability. Working closely with senior leadership, project teams, subcontractors, and DNOs, you will support projects from tender and design through to construction, commissioning, and grid energisation.

You will act as the company's technical authority for electrical matters, ensuring high standards of quality, compliance, and safety while helping develop the policies, procedures, and team capability required to support continued growth and ISO accreditation.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and develop the electrical function, setting technical standards, culture, and direction across the business.

Recruit, mentor, and performance-manage electrical and commissioning staff as the department grows.

Act as the primary escalation point for electrical technical issues across the business.

Ensure electrical installations comply with BS 7671, CDM 2015, relevant UK legislation, and industry standards, including BESS requirements.

Lead DNO engagement throughout the project lifecycle, from grid connection applications and G99 through to HV energisation and post-commissioning sign-off.

Manage HV safety documentation, switching schedules, and safe systems of work in line with DNO requirements.

Coordinate and witness G99 commissioning tests with DNOs, ensuring key grid connection milestones are achieved.

Provide technical input into tenders, electrical scope definition, specifications, design reviews, and value engineering.

Review electrical designs, single-line diagrams, and subcontractor submissions to ensure they are accurate, buildable, and compliant.

Develop and maintain electrical policies, procedures, and working practices as part of the wider management system.

Support ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 accreditation, acting as the electrical subject matter expert during audits.

Provide technical support to site teams, including drawing reviews, procurement decisions, and resolution of technical queries.

Review and approve subcontractor RAMS and electrical documentation before works commence.

Oversee the integration and commissioning of SCADA, inverter, and monitoring systems across Solar PV and BESS projects.

Build and lead an in-house commissioning team, reducing reliance on subcontracted commissioning resource.

Plan and oversee HV and LV commissioning activities, pre-energisation checks, and BESS commissioning.

Review and approve electrical certification, test results, EICRs, O&M manuals, and as-built documentation.

About You

You are an experienced electrical professional with a strong background in renewable energy, ideally with significant experience across utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects. You will have operated at a senior or lead level, with the technical knowledge and leadership skills to develop an electrical function and act as the technical authority for the business.

You will be confident dealing with DNOs, HV systems, commissioning, and grid connections, while also being comfortable supporting commercial, design, and project teams. You are a natural leader who can make confident technical decisions, communicate effectively with a range of stakeholders, and maintain high standards across multiple projects.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Qualified electrician with a Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installations or equivalent qualification.
  • Current 18th Edition IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671), including awareness of Amendment 4 and BESS requirements.
  • Solar PV installation qualification, such as City & Guilds 2922 or equivalent.
  • City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent Inspection & Testing qualification.
  • Current ECS Gold Card.
  • IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate, with NEBOSH preferred.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Minimum 7 years' electrical contracting experience within the renewable energy sector.
  • Significant experience working on utility-scale Solar PV and BESS construction and commissioning projects.
  • Previous experience in a senior, lead, or management-level electrical role.
  • Proven experience managing DNO relationships from grid connection applications through to G99 testing and energisation.
  • Practical experience of HV works, HV safety documentation, and DNO safe systems of work.
  • Experience reviewing and approving subcontractor RAMS and technical documentation within a CDM Principal Contractor environment.
  • Working knowledge of SCADA, inverter communications, and electrical monitoring systems within a Solar PV/BESS environment.
  • Experience contributing to ISO management systems or similar QMS frameworks is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or ETAP for reviewing electrical design outputs is advantageous.

Desirable:

  • HV Authorised Person (AP) qualification.
  • IET Level 3 Award in Electrical Energy Storage Systems.
  • NICEIC/ECA Approved Electrician status or equivalent.
  • HNC/HND or degree in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Energy, or equivalent professional experience.
