Description & RequirementsTechnical Implementation Lead - 12-month contract
Last year, the South African G20 Presidency helped to deliver a global first for international carbon market infrastructure - a voluntary, common foundation for carbon credit data standardisation, known as the Common Carbon Credit Data Model ('Data Model'). The Data Model provides guidance on standardisation of key data fields across the carbon credit lifecycle, from pre issuance to retirement. This is a critical step to resolving one of the market infrastructure obstacles that prevents carbon credit markets from scaling - and channeling potential tens of billions of annual, debt free dollars to emerging markets and developing economies.
The CDSC was established in 2022 by French President Emmanuel Macron and United Nations Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions Michael R. Bloomberg. Chaired by Mary Schapiro, the CDSC brings together global policymakers, regulators, and international organisations, informed by data providers and civil society, to improve access to standardised climate data.
The Climate Data Steering Committee (CDSC) Secretariat was the Lead Knowledge Partner on the development of the Data Model and is now piloting and testing it with interested jurisdictions and market participants. This role is therefore a unique and exciting opportunity for the right candidate to bring to bear deep technical skills in support of a project with global reach and impact. It would also offer unparalleled opportunity to gain insight into how to support effective policy making around carbon markets across a set of major markets and the wider private sector.
What's the role?
We are looking for someone who has experience mapping data models and designing data schemas to join our team and support work to pilot the Data Model with carbon market participants such as registries, exchanges, and project developers, as well as with policymakers and regulators.
The candidate would ideally have an understanding of the opportunities and challenges relating to data standardisation and a strong interest in learning more about carbon markets. In return, we can offer an insight into how to progress globally influential work, involving governments, standard setting bodies and the wider carbon markets ecosystem. The role will involve travel to support our global work.
We'll trust you to:If indicated, please note that years of experience are a guide; we will consider applications from all candidates who can demonstrate the skills necessary for the role.
