Plant Workshop Mechanic

Location: Exeter, Devon Hours: 8am - 5pm, Monday - Friday Pay: From £20 Per Hour Holiday: 28 Days including Bank Holiday Sector: Civil engineering, Plant Machinery, Workshop

Our client is a well-established groundworks and civil engineering contractor supporting developers across Devon. They collaborate with over ten of the UK's largest housebuilders, delivering high-quality infrastructure and groundworks to enable the construction of new homes. By taking responsibility for the early phases of development, they help make the build process more efficient for their clients. This is supported by a dedicated in-house team of skilled professionals who consistently deliver projects to a high standard.

They are now looking to recruit two Heavy Plant Mechanics, one for their workshop based in Exeter and one mobile mechanic to cover the Devon area. The mobile mechanic will be provided with a company Van and fuel costs will be covered.

You'll be ensuring the smooth running, maintenance and function of plant machinery. Inspecting, servicing, and repairing heavy machinery such as excavators, loaders, and dumpers to keep them operating safely and efficiently. You'll be diagnosing faults, replacing or repairing components, and maintaining accurate service records while ensuring all work meets safety and manufacturer standards.

Position Duties

  • Carry out routine inspections on plant machinery (e.g. excavators, dumpers, loaders) and diagnose faults using both manual checks and diagnostic equipment.
  • Repair mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical faults on a wide range of heavy plant equipment.
  • Complete service records, job sheets, and maintenance logs accurately, reporting any major issues or recurring faults.
  • Follow company health and safety procedures, ensuring machinery is safe to operate and work is carried out in line with regulations.
  • Assist with equipment testing and quality checks after repairs.
  • Cleaning, inspecting and preparing heavy plant for transfer or redeployment.
  • Working alongside other team members on larger maintenance / repair tasks.

Position Requirements

  • Experience of heavy plant and construction equipment and hydraulic systems.
  • Experience of heavy plant routine maintenance and repair.
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in plant maintenance would be beneficial.
  • A Problem-solving attitude and the ability to follow company procedures correctly to ensure the best outcomes.
  • Proactive mind set, with ability to use your initiative
  • Great time management, communication and organisational skills are essential to the smooth running of the workshop.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • A full driving licence is essential to this position.

Position Remuneration

  • Regular working hours with the potential for overtime working and pay as required but the business.
  • Pay from £20 per hour, based on your previous experience
  • 20 days of annual leave plus 8 bank holidays
