Job Overview

Slough Borough Council is seeking an experienced Highways Design Engineer to support the delivery of highway and transport projects on a full-time hybrid basis.

This role will involve producing design documentation across concept, preliminary and detailed design stages for a range of highway and transport schemes. The successful candidate will have strong technical design capability, experience across active travel and road safety projects, and the ability to contribute to budget monitoring and financial control.

This is a specialist engineering role requiring strong UK highways design knowledge and proficiency in industry-standard software.

This role requires direct UK highway / transport design experience.

You must be confident using Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Keylines, Keysigns and Vehicle Tracking, and have strong working knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets and LTN 1/20.

Candidates without relevant highways / transport design experience are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce design documentation for highway and transport projects
  • Prepare concept, preliminary and detailed designs
  • Produce drawings, calculations, reports and specifications
  • Support delivery of public transport schemes
  • Design cycling, walking and road safety projects across minor and major schemes
  • Contribute to budget monitoring and financial control
  • Apply UK highway design standards and guidance to project delivery
  • Use industry-standard CAD and design software to prepare technical outputs
  • Support design improvements and manage change where needed
  • Communicate technical information clearly through written reports and design documentation

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Strong experience in UK highway and transport design
  • Proficiency in Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Keylines, Keysigns and Vehicle Tracking
  • Experience producing concept, preliminary and detailed design packages
  • Experience designing public transport, cycling, walking and road safety schemes
  • Strong knowledge of DMRB, Manual for Streets and LTN 1/20
  • Experience in budget monitoring and financial control
  • Ability to communicate clearly through written reports and technical documents
  • Ability to challenge constructively, improve design approaches and manage change
