St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking a full time Substantive Consultant ENT Surgeon with a specialist interest in otology and lateral skull base surgery. The post involves delivering complex tertiary care at St George's Hospital, contributing to general ENT services at Kingston Hospital, and working within a hub-and-spoke network serving South West London.

The successful candidate will join the Lateral Skull Base MDT, collaborating with neurosurgery, audiology, radiology, and oncology colleagues, performing advanced otology and skull base procedures, and supporting service development, audit, and teaching. Leadership, mentorship, and academic engagement are also key aspects of the role.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a comprehensive Otology and Lateral Skull Base service across St George's Hospital and Kingston Hospital. Key duties include delivering specialist inpatient, day case and outpatient care, and contributing to the multidisciplinary skull base service at St George's.

The appointee will support development of the otology and skull base service, including participation in audit, clinical governance, service planning, and maintenance of surgical and national databases.

At Kingston Hospital, the post holder will deliver otology clinics and middle ear surgery, work collaboratively with audiology services, and contribute to general ENT outpatient and day case activity.

The role also includes participation in emergency ENT care and on call duties, providing senior clinical support when required.

In addition, the post holder will provide leadership, teaching, and mentorship to junior medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team, while actively contributing to training, appraisal, and continuous professional development.

St. George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest healthcare units in the United Kingdom, accommodating around 1170 beds and treating around 89,000 inpatient and day cases, and over 448,000 outpatients annually. The Trust employs over 6,000 staff incorporating 1,100 Medical & Dental Staff. It provides general acute services together with specialty services including neurosciences, cardiothoracic, and specialist children's services.

The Trust is on three sites, St George's Hospital, the base for acute general medicine and surgical services, Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton (QMR), and St John's Therapy Centre, Battersea, where services for care of elderly patients previously at Bolingbroke Hospital are now based. The Trust serves a resident population of about 300,000 and serves two local Primary Care Trusts, Wandsworth and Merton which have a total population of approximately 600,000 between them.

As well as acute hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist and community hospital based care and a full range of community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, 11 health centres and clinics, schools and nurseries, patients' homes and Wandsworth Prison.

The Trust works closely in association with the Medical School and forms a joint cancer centre with the Royal Marsden.

Job responsibilities

Clinical Duties

• Provide specialist otology and lateral skull base care, including outpatient, day case, and inpatient activity at St Georges Hospital.
• Participate as a core member of the Skull Base MDT.
• Deliver otology clinics and middle ear surgery at Kingston Hospital.
• Contribute to general ENT services at Kingston, including outpatient and day case surgery.
• Participate in emergency ENT care and on call duties.

Service Development and Governance

• Support service development, audit, and quality improvement activities.
• Maintain surgical logbooks and contribute to national databases.
• Assist in updating clinical pathways and standard operating procedures.
• Work with audiology services to support tinnitus and MRI referral pathways.

Leadership, Teaching and Professional Duties

• Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to junior staff.
• Participate in teaching, training, appraisal, and CPD.
• Engage in clinical governance and comply with Trust policies and GMC guidance.

Person Specification Qualifications

• Appropriate Registration with the GMC.
• Appropriate higher medical qualification ie FRCS(ORL-HNS or equivalent.
• Entry onto the Specialist Register for GMC or be within six months of obtaining CCT/CCST or equivalent.
• MD or equivalent higher degree or evidence of relevant research.

Experience

• High standard of clinical skill and expertise in the specialty.
• Able to contribute to the full range of skills required for the on call rota for the specialty.
• Other specific medical interests.

Teaching

• Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
• Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates/post graduates.

Management

• Audit/Research experience.
• Motivated to ensure achievement of defined targets.
• Formal training, qualification, or evidence of leadership and change management.
• Familiarity within issues of service organisation and development.
• Experience of change management.

Research

• Experience of research, particularly in collaboration with other clinicians.
• Willingness to continue participation in research.

Other skills

• Potential to cope with stressful situations, undertake responsibility and be a team player.
• Enthusiastic and approachable.
