Job Description

This is a 15-hour-per-week role with flexible scheduling to accommodate the needs of the young person and the tutor.

About the Role

You will provide 1:1 mentoring and tuition sessions to support a young child who currently struggles to access a full classroom environment. Sessions will take place within a school setting in a safe, low-stimulus space designated for individual work and regulation.

Your role will include:

  • Supporting the child to rebuild confidence and engagement with learning
  • Helping them tolerate short, structured activities appropriate to their developmental stage
  • Encouraging early communication, play and social-interaction skills
  • Gradually preparing them for reintegration into the classroom at a pace that supports emotional regulation
  • Building a trusting, secure and consistent relationship

About the Young Person

The child is 4 years old and has:

  • Global Developmental Delay
  • Delayed speech, language and communication skills
  • Difficulties with social interaction, attention, and sensory regulation
  • A preference for calm, predictable environments
  • Strong interests such as numbers, rhymes, mirrors, water play, and cause-and-effect toys

They respond best to:

  • Gentle, consistent adult support
  • Makaton, gestures and simple visual cues
  • Short, motivating activities and sensory-based approaches

Your role will be to help them feel safe, regulated and successful, so they can begin accessing more of their education.

What We're Looking For

We welcome applicants with experience in:

  • SEND (especially early years, ASD profiles or developmental delays)
  • Behaviour support and emotional regulation approaches
  • Working with non-verbal or minimally verbal children
  • Play-based, sensory-based or child-led approaches
  • Supporting reintegration into education
  • You must have at least 6 months experience within a UK based education setting

You must be:

  • Patient, nurturing and attuned to children's emotional needs
  • Confident working 1:1 with early years pupils
  • Able to follow safeguarding and confidentiality procedures
  • Reliable, positive and committed to helping a young child make progress

Pay & Availability

  • £25-£30 per hour (depending on experience)
  • 15 hours per week
  • Flexible days and times to suit the child's needs and your availability
  • Start date: ASAP
