Design Manager

Location: East Grinstead (Full-time, Office-Based)

An established and respected business within the custom build residential sector is seeking an experienced Design Manager to lead its in-house design team.

With decades of expertise in delivering high-quality, bespoke timber frame homes, this organisation specialises in efficient, sustainable construction and prides itself on technical excellence and customer-focused design.

This is an exciting opportunity for a talented design professional with proven leadership experience to play a key role in delivering outstanding residential projects from concept through to manufacture.



The Role

As Design Manager, you will oversee the full design process for bespoke residential homes and small-scale developments, ensuring projects are delivered accurately, on time, and to the highest quality standards.

You will lead a small team of Designers and Technicians, working closely with Project Managers, Engineers, and internal manufacturing and construction teams to translate client visions into thoughtful, buildable solutions.

This is a full-time, office-based position in East Grinstead.



Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of Designers and Technicians

  • Oversee production of drawings from concept and planning through to Building Control and Technical Construction stages

  • Manage team workload to ensure deadlines are achieved without compromising quality

  • Collaborate with Project Managers and engage with clients to develop practical, well-considered designs

  • Coordinate with internal manufacturing and construction departments

  • Review and approve technical drawings for accuracy and regulatory compliance

  • Support and mentor team members to encourage professional development

  • Manage drawing storage, filing, and documentation control processes



About You

Qualifications & Technical Skills

  • RIBA qualification or equivalent architectural qualification

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD

  • Working knowledge of SketchUp, Enscape and Photoshop

Experience

  • Proven experience managing and leading a design team

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating creative and technical expertise

  • In-depth knowledge of UK planning policy and building regulations

  • Understanding of structural design principles, particularly timber frame construction

  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and associated responsibilities

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

Desirable

  • Experience using AI and digital tools within architectural workflows

  • Knowledge of sustainable design and energy-efficient construction practices
