ThisRCS-approved, senior clinical fellowship position is suitable for Neurosurgicaltrainees who are at the end of their training; ie at post-CCT or peri-CCTlevel. Candidates should have successfully completed the FRCS examination inNeurosurgery by the time of application submission. This post is not suitablefor more junior applicants; those who are not currently at the level of a dayone consultant should not apply.

Main duties of the job Weseek a dynamic individual, capable of meeting the considerable demands of thisfellowship post, working in this complex and demanding subspecialty ofneurosurgery.
Thedepartment of Neurosurgery in Leeds is proud to offer a world-class vascularneurosurgical MDT service. The service is consultant-led and delivered; througha dedicated sub-specialty MDT service and is supported by a dedicatedsub-specialty Neurovascular Consultant on call.
TheFellowship is designed for Neurosurgical clinicians towards at end of theirtraining and will provide all aspects of sub-specialty training inNeurovascular microsurgery, in preparation for a consultant rolesub-specialising in this challenging field.
TheNeurosurgical Vascular Fellowship post will include a thorough grounding in theclinical management, investigation and surgical/radiological techniques foroptimally managing adult patients with all forms of neurovascular surgicaldiseases.
Duringthe fellowship, there are opportunities to attend neurovascular radiology (INR)theatres, however it should be stressed that this fellowship is a microsurgicalneurovascular fellowship and is not a hybrid (endovascular) training programme.
About us LeedsGeneral Infirmary operates a strong, collaborative MDT-based approach toNeurovascular disease; with close and collaborative links to the InterventionalNeuro-Radiology Department. There are significant further opportunities todevelop research projects. Close teamwork with the neuro-radiologists,researchers and the Clinical Nurse Specialist team is expected. The Fellow willgain independent competencies in managing adult patients presenting withaneurysms (acute and elective), cavernoma and AVM.
Thesuccessful applicant will also be expected to contribute towards theDepartmental Neurosurgical On-Call Service, at a registrar level.

TheLeeds Teaching Hospitals NHS trust is one of the largest trusts in the UK andprovides comprehensive secondary services to Leeds and tertiary services toWest and North Yorkshire. The GeneralInfirmary at Leeds is situated in the centre of the city, adjacent to LeedsUniversity, with which there are strong research and teaching links.
INFORMATIONABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
TheDepartment of Neurosurgery provides a comprehensive neurosurgical service tothe 2.5 million people of West and North Yorkshire. The Neurosurgical Department is housed withinthe Jubilee Wing of the General Infirmary at Leeds.
Thecentralised Neurosurgical Department has approximately 84 adult ward bedsacross three wards, with an additional 7-bedded, dedicated Neuro-intensive CareUnit; as well as a 7-bedded dedicated High Dependency Unit. There are four adult operating theatres,including one dedicated to emergency surgery 24 hours per day. There are separate beds, operating theatresand intensive care facilities for Paediatric Neurosurgery.
TheNeurosurgical Department has close links with the other neurosciencespecialties that are all on site including Neuroradiology, Neurology,Neuroanaesthetics and Neurophysiology.The Neuro-pathology department for Yorkshire is now based at St Jamesshospital and continues to provide a full histological and post-mortem serviceincluding facilities for intra-operative histopathology.
TheNeuroradiology Department is based at Leeds General Infirmary and comprisesmultiple Diagnostic Radiology Consultants, three of whom also provideInterventional Endovascular Services, together with one Hybrid-TrainedConsultant Neurosurgeon.
TheGeneral Infirmary at Leeds is a level 1 trauma unit and there are close linkswith surgical specialties including trauma, maxillofacial, plastics and ENTsurgery.
TheDepartment's work has continued to increase over the past years. The current caseload is some 3000 inpatientsper year and approximately 2000 operative cases per year.
Thedepartment of Neurosurgery in Leeds provides world-class adult Neurovascularcare. The service is consultant-led anddelivered through dedicated subspecialty services. The Neurovascular services have very stronglinks with Neurology, Neuroradiology and Neuropathology (includingcytogenetics) and Leeds University.
Aswould be expected to support Vascular Neurosurgery, the theatres have BrainLABneuro-navigation with Smart Brush Angio software, Zeiss Kinevo microscopes(including integrated navigation and QEVO inspection cameras), intra-operativeICG with Flow 800 software, fluorescein angiography and intra-operativeultrasound. Trans-cranial Dopplermeasurements are utilised for patients with potential DCI. All patients arediscussed in a weekly MDT that conforms to the IOG Standards. Acuteneurovascular patients also have an acute MDT-based treatment plan documented,ahead of securing their aneurysms.
Theacute Neurovascular service is currently led surgically by Mr Phillips, MrDeniz, Mr Anderson and Mr Sheikh, with Mr Tyagi providing paediatricneurovascular surgery cover. It runs a weekly neurovascular MDT meeting,followed by an MDT clinic; run by Neurosurgeons, InterventionalNeuro-Radiologists and Neurovascular Specialist Nurses, plus the NeurovascularFellow (this post).
Patientsreferred to this clinic are typically further investigated via Cerebralcatheter angiogram with 3D reconstruction where appropriate. All patients areoffered the choice of management options (where appropriate) includingendovascular, as well as microsurgical treatment. Microsurgical treatment isaugmented by use of neuro navigation, intra-operative ICG, neuro-physiologicalmonitoring, endoscopic inspection tools and intra-operative Doppler. Leedslooks after approximately 200-230 acute patients presenting with subarachnoidhaemorrhage every year. 35-45 patients undergo microsurgical treatment forintracranial aneurysms per annum (41 patients in 2022). We also offermicrosurgery for a variety of other conditions, including cavernoushaemangiomas, AVMs and dural AV fistulae.
TheNeurovascular service is supported by two Clinical Nurse Specialists, who workacross the Neurosurgery and Neuro-Radiology departments and provide outreachvia clinics, telephone consultation and patient support groups, as well asinpatient support.
TheNeurovascular team also runs a dedicated monthly neurovascular journal club anda quarterly neurovascular M&M meeting. The neurovascular fellow has anactive role in the preparation and presentation for both of these activities.
