Legal Disrepair Surveyor
Salary: From £60,000 per annum
Location: London (hybrid working)
Contract: Permanent, Full Time
Make your technical expertise count where it really matters.
This is an opportunity for an experienced
Legal Disrepair Surveyor to step into a senior, specialist role where your technical judgement, legal credibility, and professional integrity genuinely shape outcomes.
You will be trusted as the technical authority on housing disrepair, working at the interface between surveying, legal services, and resident outcomes. This role suits a surveyor who is confident operating in court-facing environments, comfortable challenging claims where appropriate, and equally capable of driving high-quality remedial solutions.
The Opportunity You will take ownership of a varied and complex disrepair caseload, leading investigations from first inspection through to legal resolution. Acting as an expert voice, you will prepare court-ready technical reports, represent the organisation in legal settings, and work closely with solicitors and counsel to ensure cases are handled robustly, proportionately, and professionally.
This is not a volume inspections role. It is a position for someone who enjoys technical depth, professional accountability, and being relied upon for sound, defensible judgement.
What You'll Be Doing - Leading on housing disrepair claims from pre-action through to settlement or court proceedings.
- Carrying out detailed inspections to diagnose defects, determine causation, and assess liability.
- Producing expert reports, Scott Schedules, schedules of condition, and witness statements suitable for court use.
- Acting as an expert witness where required, including attendance at conferences and court.
- Managing legal casework alongside solicitors and external advisors, ensuring deadlines and evidential standards are met.
- Instructing and overseeing remedial works, ensuring solutions are technically appropriate and legally defensible.
- Providing clear, authoritative technical advice to internal stakeholders and legal teams.
- Identifying trends and root causes to support continuous improvement and reduce future claims exposure.
What We're Looking For - Strong background in building surveying with demonstrable experience in housing disrepair.
- Proven experience preparing expert witness statements and engaging with legal proceedings.
- Confident representing an organisation in court-related or formal legal settings.
- Excellent understanding of building pathology, defects diagnosis, damp and mould, and residential construction.
- Ability to manage complex cases with professionalism, discretion, and attention to detail.
- Professional membership with RICS or CIOB (chartered status preferred but not essential).
Why This Role Stands Out - Salary starting from £60,000, reflecting the seniority and specialist nature of the role.
- High-trust position with real autonomy and professional respect.
- Exposure to complex, interesting cases rather than transactional surveying.
- Hybrid working with flexibility around site and office time.
- A role that values expertise, judgement, and credibility over volume.
