Rate: 500- 600 per day - Negotiable DOE
Contract Length: 3-6-month initial contract

In partnership with a northern Local Authority, Spencer Clarke Group are recruiting for an exceptional Head of Legal.

Reporting to the Director of Law and Governance, you will provide authoritative legal and governance advice to senior officers, elected members and key political stakeholders.

This is a crucial role in service planning, performance, governance arrangements and delivery of high-quality, value-for-money services across the Council.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the Legal Services function, ensuring delivery of statutory duties, council priorities and high-quality legal advice.
• Provide strategic legal and governance advice to the Chief Executive, Executive Management Team, elected members and statutory officers.
• Lead on legal governance initiatives, projects and activities, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements, standing orders and financial regulations.
• Work collaboratively with senior governance leaders to cultivate a strong ethical culture across the organisation.

What We're Looking For

• Qualified Solicitor or Barrister (England & Wales) with a current practising certificate.
• Extensive senior leadership experience within a local authority or similar public sector legal environment.
• Proven track record of delivering high-quality legal services within challenging resource environments.
• Experience leading, motivating and developing large teams in a changing environment.
• Demonstrable ability to work across services and with external partners to achieve corporate objectives.
