The top candidate will lead a software development team in the AWS Case Interaction Management in Cape Town, owning one or more critical services that help AWS customers have an outstanding support experience via products such as AWS Support Center. As the leader of the team, the individual will be responsible for setting a high operational bar, driving high availability and scalability of the service, and hiring and developing the best engineers to deliver features that delight customers. The candidate will have significant leadership responsibility to define the team's vision and goals, engage closely with stakeholders and customers, and manage delivery.
Key job responsibilities
- Hire, motivate, mentor, and grow a high-performing engineering team, providing them with appropriate opportunities to succeed in their career objectives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams: Work effectively with product managers and software engineers on other service teams to ensure the successful delivery of features.
- Lead engineering team in executing against project plans, and delivery commitments.
- Delivery of high-quality, scalable software on-time and on-budget.
- Work closely with the leadership team to provide input on annual, roadmaps, and strategic discussions.
- Be deeply involved with engineers to architect and develop the best technical designs and approaches.
- Build operational excellence to reduce lead times and maintain the operations of critical services.
- Clearly communicate technical decisions and progress to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Conduct performance reviews of team members.
- Translate business, functional, and technical requirements into detailed project plans.

- 3+ years of engineering team management experience and 7+ years of engineering experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams and experience delivering products against plan in a fast-paced, multi-disciplined, distributed-responsibility and often ambiguous environment
- Experience designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
- Experience managing a team of high calibre Software Engineers developing complex, world class, scalable software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers
