This role is a fantastic opportunity for an artist who thrives on the challenge of creating dynamic simulations-ranging from photorealistic elements to highly stylized, abstract effects-within an award-winning, ethical production environment. As a 3D FX Artist at Blue Zoo, you will be part of the UK's first major B Corp certified animation studio. We don't just care about the final pixels on the screen; we care about the people who create them. This role is specifically designated for Regional Talent based in the UK but outside the London M25 area, supporting our mission to build a diverse and geographically inclusive creative workforce. Job Overview: 3D FX Artist Entity Details Company Name Blue Zoo Animation Studio Position Mid-Level 3D FX Artist Department Advertising & Specialist Projects Location UK Regional (Strictly Outside M25) Salary Range £38,000 - £52,000 Per Annum (Dependent on skills & experience) Work Mode Flexible / Hybrid / Remote (UK Based Only) Primary Software Houdini & Maya Studio Status B Corp Certified & Multi-BAFTA Winning The Mission: Dynamics, Simulation, and Visual Mastery In the world of high-end advertising and short-form animation, the "FX" are often the stars of the show. Whether it's the perfect splash in a beverage commercial, a stylized explosion of color for a brand launch, or complex environmental simulations for our award-winning short films, the FX department is where the magic happens. As a Mid-Level FX Artist, you will be expected to bridge the gap between technical execution and artistic vision. You will work closely with Directors and Art Leads to ensure that every simulation-be it fire, smoke, water, or something entirely abstract-complements the character animation and enhances the overall storytelling. Key Responsibilities & Day-to-Day Impact Dynamic Systems: Create and manage complex simulations including fluid dynamics (water/viscous liquids), fire, smoke, dust, and cloth. Abstract FX: Participate in the creative process to develop unique, non-photorealistic, or stylized effects that set our advertising projects apart from the competition. Procedural Assets: Build, run, and modify procedural assets and tools to streamline the FX pipeline across multiple shots. Previz & Lighting: Render out high-quality previz shots to demonstrate timing and scale to Directors before final lighting and compositing. 2. Pipeline & Workflow Integration Multi-Package Mastery: Demonstrate extreme flexibility by moving seamlessly between Houdini and Maya, ensuring that assets and simulations transition correctly across the pipeline. Inter-Departmental Synergy: Communicate effectively with the Lighting, Compositing, and Asset teams to ensure your FX layers are optimized for the final "beauty" pass. Compositing Awareness: Maintain a working knowledge of Nuke to check your own work and understand how FX passes will be integrated into the final image. 3. Delivery & Professionalism Schedule Management: Work efficiently under the tight deadlines typical of the advertising industry without compromising on visual quality or technical stability. Proactive Problem Solving: Identify potential simulation bottlenecks early and suggest creative workarounds or optimizations. Feedback Integration: Actively participate in dailies and reviews, demonstrating a positive attitude when iterating on effects based on client or Director feedback. Who We Are Looking For Blue Zoo Animation Studio is seeking a FX artist who possesses a "detective's mind" for troubleshooting and an "artist's soul" for composition and movement. Core Requirements (Must Have) Technical Depth: In-depth knowledge of Houdini is essential. You should be comfortable with SOPs, POPs, and Vellum, with a solid grasp of FLIP and Pyro solvers. Software Versatility: Strong proficiency in Maya. You understand how to bridge these two powerhouses effectively. VFX Fundamentals: A comprehensive understanding of the entire visual effects pipeline, from modeling and layout to final composite. Artistic Eye: Strong skills in composition, color, and timing. You don't just make the simulation "correct"; you make it look beautiful. Regional Eligibility: You must be based in the UK and reside outside of the M25. This is a client-mandated requirement for this specific role to encourage regional industry growth. Bonus Points (Standing Out) Mentorship: A willingness to share knowledge with junior artists or interns. Tool Building: Experience writing basic Python or HDA tools to help the team work smarter. Creative Input: A portfolio that shows "out of the box" thinking, particularly with abstract or stylized effects rather than just "standard" simulations. The Blue Zoo Experience: Why Join Us? Blue Zoo Animation Studio is more than just a studio; it is a community of creators who believe that a happy artist is a productive artist. Our B Corp status means we are legally committed to social and environmental responsibility. Our Culture of Excellence Best Places to Work: We have been recognized by Broadcast as one of the Best Places to Work in TV consistently from 2019 through 2026. The Shorts Programme: Every year, we fund internal short films. This program is open to everyone-not just directors. It's a chance to experiment with new FX techniques and see your name in the credits of a film that might just win an Annie or a BAFTA. Financial Wellbeing: Participation in our Profit Share scheme (for those with 2+ years of service) and a comprehensive benefits package with various discounts. Mental Health & Wellness: Access to an online wellbeing program and the iFeel mental health platform. Engagement: Bi-monthly employee feedback sessions ensure that the studio evolves based on your input. Social Life: Even for our regional and remote staff, we host numerous fun social events, both in-person and digital, to ensure no one feels isolated. About Blue Zoo Animation Studio Founded in London in 2000, Blue Zoo has grown from a small group of friends into the UK's leading dedicated CG animation studio. Our commitment to diversity and inclusion means we invite everyone to "bring their whole selves to work," fostering an environment where fresh perspectives are celebrated and respected. How to Apply Please submit your CV and a link to your FX Showreel. Your reel should clearly demonstrate your ability to handle both realistic simulations and stylized effects. Please include a breakdown of your work, specifying which tools were used for each shot. Note: Due to the "Regional Only" nature of this role, please confirm your location in your application. We anticipate a high volume of applications and may close the vacancy early once a suitable pool of candidates is identified. Mid-Level 3D FX Artist Blue Zoo Animation Studio

Lead Azure Databricks Platform Engineer / Architect Hands-on Platform Engineering Serverless FinOps POSIT/RStudio Migration 6 Month contract Inside IR35 - 500 a day London/Hybrid Role Purpose We are seeking a highly experienced, hands-on Azure Databricks Platform Engineer / Architect to enhance and optimise an enterprise Data Platform. The role combines architecture with direct implementation: the successful candidate must be able to configure, develop, troubleshoot and optimise Azure Databricks rather than operate only at design or governance level. The role is centred on three outcomes: enabling and optimising Databricks Serverless, strengthening FinOps and platform controls, and enhancing the Databricks Discovery Zone to support workloads currently delivered through POSIT/RStudio. Key Responsibilities 1. Databricks Serverless Enablement and Optimisation Assess existing workloads and determine suitability for Serverless, classic, job or interactive compute based on duration, utilisation, SLA, concurrency, performance and cost. Enable and configure Serverless for appropriate jobs, SQL workloads, notebooks, analytical processing and data pipelines. Establish workload-placement guidance, including when Serverless is not economical for predictable, heavy or continuously running workloads. Implement compute policies, autoscaling, quotas, budget controls and operational guardrails. Measure cost and performance outcomes, identify idle or oversized compute, and recommend optimisation actions. 2. FinOps and Enterprise Platform Controls Define and embed a practical FinOps operating model covering ownership, accountability, projects, environments, teams, applications and cost centres. Implement mandatory tagging and integrate validation into CI/CD so non-compliant resources are prevented from being provisioned. Provide granular cost attribution by workspace, project, application, workload, job and team/user where technically appropriate. Implement budget policies, thresholds, proactive alerts and usage reporting to prevent uncontrolled spend. Use platform usage and billing data to identify idle compute, inefficient workloads, unnecessary storage/data movement and cost anomalies. 3. Databricks Discovery Zone and POSIT/RStudio Migration Enhance the Databricks Discovery Zone to support migration from POSIT/RStudio Enable application deployment, secure API integrations, external data ingestion, LLM integration, scheduling, BI connectivity, local IDE-based development and operational reporting. Define reusable onboarding and migration patterns that reduce technology sprawl while improving security, supportability and delivery speed. 4. Data Engineering and Integration Design and build reliable ingestion and transformation pipelines using Python, PySpark, SQL and Delta Lake. Implement full and incremental ingestion, CDC where appropriate, schema evolution, reconciliation, error handling and data quality controls. Design reusable integration patterns for REST APIs, SaaS platforms, databases, files, object storage, document repositories, enterprise applications and public/external data providers. Implement secure authentication and credential handling for external and internal integrations. Build end-to-end data flows from source through governed ingestion and curated layers to BI, ML or application consumption. Required Hands-on Technical Skills Deep hands-on Azure Databricks implementation and troubleshooting Databricks Serverless and compute/workload optimisation Azure identity, networking, security, secrets, monitoring and private connectivity Databricks SQL, Delta Lake and performance optimisation Python, PySpark and SQL Jobs/workflows, incremental processing, CDC and data quality REST/API and external data integration patterns FinOps, cost attribution, tagging, budgets, monitoring and operational support Experience and Candidate Profile Significant experience delivering enterprise Azure Databricks platforms in production environments. Demonstrable ability to move between architecture, implementation, debugging and optimisation without depending entirely on specialist engineering teams. Strong understanding of platform security, data governance, operational support and controlled delivery in regulated or complex enterprises. Experience working collaboratively with data engineers, data scientists, architects, security teams, platform teams and business stakeholders. Clear communication skills and the ability to document standards, patterns, decisions and operational guidance. Highly Desirable but not Mandatory POSIT/RStudio migration or consolidation experience. Migration of analytical/data science workloads (convert and migrate R development/Libraries to Databricks). AI/ML, LLM integration, model lifecycle, RAG/vector retrieval or model-serving experience. Large-scale enterprise platform transformation and regulated-industry experience. Strong cost optimisation and FinOps delivery experience across Azure and Databricks.
