The Principal Engineer Power Electronics will lead the development of advanced power electronics systems from clean-sheet concept through to validated hardware. The role is responsible for defining requirements, leading circuit and magnetic design, and overseeing prototype implementation for traction inverters, DC/DC converters, On-Board Chargers (OBC), and associated electrified powertrain systems. This is a senior technical leadership role requiring deep expertise in power electronics, strong commercial awareness, and the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in delivering innovative, high-performance, and safety-compliant solutions. Key Responsibilities Technical Leadership Lead the specification, design, and validation of power electronics systems including traction inverters, DC/DC converters, AC/DC systems, and OBCs Own magnetics and capacitor design for high-performance power converters Lead design of digital and mixed-signal control systems and processing platforms Oversee simulation activities using industry-standard tools (e.g., Simscape, PLECS) Guide control strategy development including motor control and converter control schemes Ensure compliance with relevant standards (IEC61508, ISO26262, CISPR25, EMC directives) Lead hardware development from concept through prototype and test System & Validation Develop and validate designs in virtual, HiL, and hardware environments Oversee EMC mitigation strategies and noise attenuation Support PCB layout, mechanical integration, and thermal management strategies Contribute to thermal and fluid system simulation where required Project & Commercial Leadership Lead multi-person, cross-functional engineering projects Build and manage strong technical relationships with customers Take ownership of proposals, business development activities, and technical presentations Support marketing activities and represent the company externally Operate effectively within technically and commercially challenging environments Capability & Team Development Mentor and support the professional development of engineers within the function Identify and develop new technical capabilities within the department Act as a role model for company values and engineering excellence Promote a collaborative and high-performance team culture Essential Requirements Extensive experience in power electronics system development (inverters, DC/DC, OBC, AC/DC converters) Experience in at least two sectors: automotive, aerospace, defence, off-highway, commercial vehicle, marine, or clean energy Strong expertise in magnetics design and high-power converter topologies Experience in digital and mixed-signal control design Demonstrated expertise in EMC design and electrical noise mitigation Strong simulation experience in power electronics and magnetics Experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams Proven ability to manage technical customer relationships Degree (or higher) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience) Desirable Experience Digital motor control schemes (FOC, field weakening, overmodulation, harmonic injection, fault handling) Experience across motor types (IPM, SPM, ASM, SR) Hands-on lab development in high-voltage/high-power environments PCB layout oversight and mechanical integration experience Thermal and fluid system modelling for power electronics Training in safe operation of high-voltage development equipment Key Competencies Technical authority in power electronics Systems thinking Strategic problem solving Commercial awareness Leadership and influence Clear communication (technical and non-technical audiences) Customer-focused mindset Level of Responsibility Technical authority within the power electronics function Project ownership from concept to delivery Direct influence on technical strategy and company capability development Significant customer-facing responsibility
