At Release, we believe that expert advice can change lives - especially for people who are pushed to the margins by poverty, stigma, criminalisation and complex legal problems. We are looking for a debt adviser who wants to do more than provide technical advice: someone who shares our commitment to social justice, dignity and practical support, and who wants to be part of a specialist legal team working alongside people at the point they need help most. This is not a traditional debt adviser role. It is an opportunity to help shape a newly established debt unit within our legal team, creating a holistic service that responds to the full reality of people's lives rather than treating debt in isolation. You will work alongside legal advisers and solicitors delivering free welfare benefits, debt and housing advice through our outreach services, with referrals coming directly from colleagues supporting clients with overlapping legal and financial problems. You will also provide training and support to colleagues and host centre staff, helping build confidence and understanding around debt, its impact, and how to identify when someone may need specialist advice. Many of the people we work with are facing crisis, exclusion and multiple barriers to support. In this role, you will help ensure they are met with compassion, specialist advice and joined-up support that gives them a clearer route forward. The new Debt Adviser wil join Release's multidisciplinary legal services team. The postholder will provide high-quality, non-judgmental debt advice to people experiencing financial hardship alongside issues such as substance use, homelessness, poor mental health, benefit problems and social exclusion. Ideally, you'll be qualified to Level 3 Certificate in Money and Debt Advice, the Certificate in Money Advice Practice (CertMAP), or the CMA Award in Generalist Debt Advice. Should you not have these or equivalent certifications, the appointee would be required and supported to achieve a certification within an agreed timeframe. Key Responsibilities: Deliver specialist debt advice through direct referrals for our legal team who support clients in trusted community and treatment settings. Complete financial assessments, income and expenditure work, debt screening, priority-debt triage and casework using clear, accessible and trauma-informed approaches. Advise on appropriate debt options, including Breathing Space, Debt Relief Orders, negotiated write-offs, informal and formal repayment arrangements, and referrals where another provider is better placed to help. Work closely with legal advisers, drug and alcohol services, keyworkers, peer advocates, volunteers and partner organisations to support warm referrals and coordinated care. Record casework accurately on AdvicePro and contribute to monitoring, evaluation, quality assurance, client feedback and learning from the debt advice project. Essential Requirements: At least 12 months' experience delivering debt advice in a community, advice, legal or outreach setting. Strong understanding of UK debt solutions, priority debts, social security, housing-related debt and the impact of financial hardship on people in vulnerable circumstances. Ability to provide clear, fair and not misleading advice, based on a full assessment of the client's financial and personal circumstances. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write accurate case notes, letters and reports in plain English Holidays: 29 days + public holidays Location: Hybrid - Spitalfields, London / Remote (minimum 3 days in the office) Closing Date: Until vacancy filled Interviews: Rolling Start Date: As soon as possible An enhanced DBS check will be required for the successful candidate. We particularly welcome applications from people from Black and racialised communities, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, people from working-class backgrounds, and people with lived experience of the issues we work on. We are committed to building a team that reflects the communities we serve, and we know that lived experience and diverse perspectives strengthen our legal practice and our work for systemic change. Release is committed to equal opportunities. Important Notice: For this job, Release will only consider applications from those who already have the right to live and work in the UK . AI and data centres are booming, electrification is accelerating, and trillions in generation, storage, and connection projects are queued - but the real bottleneck is the grid. Grid planning and operations are becoming a national-scale systems problem: complex network models, messy legacy data, strict governance, overloaded teams, and high-stakes decisions that affect real infrastructure. Squid is building the agentic modelling platform for power grids: a versioned, auditable source of truth where network models, data, changes, assumptions, and decisions can be tracked - and where humans and AI agents can safely work together. We unify legacy planning models, operational data, and grid workflows into software that helps teams run checks, compare models, explain changes, validate assumptions, and move faster without losing engineering rigour. Based in London, Squid is backed by premier investors like Y Combinator and partners with industry leaders including National Grid and Northern Powergrid. About the role Pay Range: £60k-£140k (salary + equity), based in London, UK. We are hiring a Chief of Staff to work directly with Squid's founders. You will build and run the operating system around the founders, taking ownership of work that currently spans company operations, finance, hiring, customer operations and board and investor preparation. This is a senior, hands-on generalist role. You will move between strategic priorities and detailed execution, helping Squid operate with reliable information, clear ownership and proportionate processes. This is a high-ownership role based in our central London office, with the opportunity to shape how the company operates as it grows. What you'll do Establish clear weekly and quarterly rhythms for priorities, decisions, risks and follow-through. Maintain a reliable view of company actions, ownership and cross-functional commitments. Prepare founder, board and adviser materials and maintain the underlying records. Maintain Squid's cash forecast, runway model, budget and monthly management information. Coordinate bookkeeping, payroll, tax, insurance, legal providers and UK and US corporate administration. Oversee invoices, expenses, procurement, approvals and core company records. Run the operating side of hiring, including candidate pipelines, interview coordination, offers and onboarding. Maintain simple people processes covering equipment, access, policies, joiners and leavers. Support strategic customer operations, including meeting preparation, account tracking and follow-through. Coordinate procurement, security, legal, data-sharing and deployment dependencies around customer accounts. Lead important cross-company initiatives that do not yet belong to a dedicated function. Qualifications You do not need to meet every requirement. We are looking for a highly capable generalist who has made complex and ambiguous work reliable. You may be a strong fit if you have: Experience in an early-stage startup, consulting, investing, finance, business operations or a similarly demanding environment. Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to turn complexity into clear decisions and actions. Confidence working with cash forecasts, budgets, management information and basic commercial analysis. Sound judgement, discretion and close attention to detail. A strong record of following through and anticipating risks across multiple workstreams. The ability to switch comfortably between strategic work and detailed operational execution. A willingness to do important operational work personally while building systems that can scale. The ability to coordinate specialist providers and understand their outputs without needing to be a qualified accountant or lawyer. Job Purpose: The Head of Resources will lead the people, systems and practical support that help every part of The Brick work well. This role sits behind our frontline work, making sure staff and volunteers feel supported, our buildings are safe, responsibilities are clear and the organisation has what it needs to serve people with care and confidence. This role is much broader than HR. It brings together people support, volunteering, quality, health and safety, property and facilities, administration, communications and organisational systems. The aim is not to create more process. We need a person who is practical, thoughtful and brave; someone who will listen before acting, challenge kindly when needed, and make sound decisions without losing sight of the human impact. We need a broad organisational leader who will understand how The Brick really works, build trust across teams and create straightforward ways of working that are safe, fair and useful. The successful person will help us keep asking: Do our staff and volunteers feel welcomed, trusted, supported and able to grow? Do managers have the clarity, confidence and support they need to lead well? Do our systems recognise people's strengths and make space for second chances? Are our buildings, facilities and core systems safe, dependable and fit for purpose? Are quality, safeguarding, health and safety and legal responsibilities managed in a humane and practical way? Work with the CEO and colleagues to turn The Brick's strategy and values into clear, practical priorities. Help build a culture where people are treated with dignity, strengths are recognised, second chances are real and accountability is fair. Build trusting relationships with managers and help them lead with clarity, compassion and consistency. Bring calm and practical structure where responsibilities or systems feel unclear, always considering how decisions affect people. Listen to staff and volunteers, identify barriers or duplication, and lead improvements with the people affected rather than doing change to them. Give the CEO, SLT and trustees honest, accessible advice and assurance, including when difficult issues need to be raised. Be a steady, hopeful and solutions-focused leader through pressure, growth and change. 2. Central services, people and management support Lead a welcoming and responsive central-services function that helps managers, staff and volunteers get the support they need. Make sure managers can access fair and consistent support with recruitment, induction, supervision, wellbeing, performance, absence, conduct and development, using specialist HR advice where needed. Strengthen management practice in a way that combines clear expectations with compassion, reflection and learning. Create simple, accessible systems so people know where to go, understand what is expected and receive timely help. Lead workforce, succession and organisational capacity planning alongside the CEO and SLT, linking people requirements to service growth, resources and risk. Maintain clear, accessible and proportionate employment frameworks, while ensuring day to day HR casework is appropriately supported by external specialists. Coordinate outsourced HR, IT and specialist support, making sure providers understand The Brick's values and give practical, respectful and good value advice. Oversee effective administration and organisational coordination, including the work of the Admin Assistant, so information, meetings, records and routine processes are well managed. Notice where support is fragmented, duplicated or missing and work with colleagues to make it more joined up and useful. 3. Volunteer leadership and development Lead the development of a clear and consistent approach to volunteering across The Brick. Ensure volunteers are welcomed, inducted, trained, supported and valued. Work with managers to clarify volunteer roles, boundaries, supervision arrangements and safeguarding expectations. Strengthen volunteer recruitment, retention, recognition and communication. Ensure volunteering is safe, inclusive and meaningful, with opportunities for people to contribute their skills, rebuild confidence and feel that they belong. Remove avoidable barriers to volunteering while keeping appropriate safeguards and clear boundaries. Develop systems that help us understand the contribution, experience and impact of volunteers. Champion volunteering as part of our belief that everyone has strengths, gifts and something valuable to contribute. 4. Health, safety and wellbeing Lead The Brick's approach to health and safety across workplaces, projects, community spaces and relevant operational activity. Ensure health and safety policies, procedures and risk assessments are up to date, proportionate and understood. Work with managers to ensure safe working practices, including lone working, manual handling, fire safety, incident reporting, first aid, food related environments and premises safety. Build a practical health and safety culture in which people understand risk, speak up without fear and learn together when things go wrong. Ensure accidents, incidents, near misses and concerns are recorded, reviewed and used for learning. Oversee health and safety training requirements and ensure managers understand their responsibilities. Work with external advisers or competent persons where specialist health and safety advice is needed. Treat health and safety as part of caring for people, not as a tick box exercise. 5. Property, facilities and organisational resources Lead operational oversight of The Brick's non-financial property, premises and facilities responsibilities. Ensure buildings, offices, hubs, warehouses, shops, food/community spaces and other premises are safe, well maintained and fit for purpose.
