If you have some technical knowledge and the right certifications, this could be your path to working legally in the UK. This guide covers everything you need to know from what the job involves, to how the visa works, to how you can apply step by step. What Does a Network Engineer Actually Do? A network engineer is someone who builds, manages, and fixes computer networks. These are the systems that allow businesses to share data, connect to the internet, and communicate internally. Even if you are not very experienced yet, understanding the basics is enough to get started in junior roles. Here are the main tasks you will handle on the job: Monitor network performance and fix connection issues Configure user accounts and access permissions Install and upgrade network systems for clients Provide technical support to office staff Manage VPNs and cloud based network tools Ensure network security and data protection You do not need to be an expert in all of these areas right away. Many UK employers hire junior or entry level network engineers and train them on the job. Why the UK Needs Foreign Network Engineers The demand for IT professionals in the UK continues to grow. Over 7,000 visa sponsorship jobs are currently listed in the UK, with a significant share in the IT and tech sectors. The UK government recognizes this skills gap and has structured the immigration system to make it easier for companies to hire from abroad. Tech infrastructure, cloud computing, and cybersecurity are growing fast. Every bank, hospital, school, and retail chain depends on network systems. That demand creates a steady flow of job openings for network engineers at all skill levels. Understanding the UK Skilled Worker Visa To work as a network engineer in the UK as a foreign national, you will most likely apply through the Skilled Worker Visa. This is the main legal route for professional workers. Here is what you need to know: Your employer must be a licensed sponsor - meaning they are approved by the UK government to hire overseas workers The UK Skilled Worker visa minimum salary threshold is now £38,700, or the "going rate" for your specific role, whichever is higher New entrant status provides a significant financial advantage for graduates - you can qualify for a tech role at a £33,400 threshold, which represents a thirty percent reduction from the standard rate Mandatory B2 English proficiency standards became effective on January 8, 2026 - all applicants must provide valid test results from an approved provider Physical BRP cards are now fully replaced by digital eVisas - ensure your UKVI account is updated before any international travel Your employer will issue you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) once you have a confirmed job offer. This document is required when you submit your visa application. Salary Range for Network Engineers in the UK Understanding what you can earn helps you know if a job offer meets visa requirements. Typical Annual Salary (GBP) Mid Level Network Engineer £38,000 - £55,000 Network Architect / Specialist £75,000 - £95,000+ The average salary for IT jobs with visa sponsorship in the UK is around £37,430, but roles requiring higher expertise can fetch salaries above £45,000. Many sponsored roles also come with benefits like pension contributions, health coverage, and in some cases relocation support. Qualifications and Skills That UK Employers Look For You do not always need a university degree. Many employers value certifications and practical experience just as much, if not more. Education: A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred by many employers However, relevant work experience combined with certifications can often substitute for a degree Certifications that increase your chances: Standard certifications such as CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate), CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional), CompTIA Network+, and Microsoft Azure or AWS certifications are widely valued These certifications show employers you have verified, practical knowledge You must be able to understand and work with standard network protocols such as TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, and OSPF, and have real experience with routers, switches, firewalls, and VPNs If you are just starting out, focus on getting CCNA or CompTIA Network+ first. These are the most recognized entry level qualifications and are respected by employers across the UK.
