Purpose of the Role: This is a key technical position delivering safe, compliant, and efficient engineering solutions for decommissioning activities through the pre construction and construction phases. This role brings industry knowledge and experience, and best practices in the decommissioning engineering, particularly where piping systems (cooling, HVAC, water etc ) span across areas/buildings/zones. The role is accountable to the JDR Decommissioning Lead Engineer for the engineering tasks in mechanical & piping systems decommissioning planning and execution, decommissioning process/procedure development, design and implementation of decommissioning plans, and documentation for decommissioning activities. The role holder will provide industry knowledge and experience, and best practices in the decommissioning engineering field in compliance with applicable regulatory and legal requirements. Key Responsibilities: Ensure development, implementation, and compliance with technical processes and operating procedures for mechanical & piping systems decommissioning. Develop detailed plans for mechanical & piping system decommissioning, including schedules coordinated with waste, logistics, and other site interfaces. Conduct site surveys to identify mechanical & piping assets requiring removal or isolation and document findings. Perform risk assessments and implement mitigation measures to prevent hazards during decommissioning activities. Engage with programme stakeholders and suppliers to define requirements, manage interfaces, and maintain positive relationships. Provide expert advice to help resolve obstacles to delivery of mechanical and piping decommissioning packages by assisting with the identification and employment of creative solutions, appropriate techniques and procedures to overcome them based on experiences and lessons learnt from previous projects. Manage or supervise disconnection, removal, and disposal of mechanical & piping equipment. Conduct final inspections and testing to confirm safe decommissioning and operational integrity of remaining systems. Ensure proper handling, recycling, or disposal of materials and hazardous waste; identify opportunities for reuse or repurposing. Profile Qualifications: Relevant engineering degree (BSc/MSc) or equivalent. Chartered Engineer status with a recognized professional institution or significant experience in similar decommissioning roles. Familiarity with CDM regulations and their implementation. Core Knowledge Areas: Strong understanding of design standards and UK compliance requirements. Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Extensive experience in the application of appropriate design codes and regulations. Knowledge of building mechanical & piping systems. Familiar with Pressure Systems and Piping Designs, typically B31.1 and BS EN 13480. Familiar with the application of Temporary Works BS5975. Familiarity with mechanical isolation procedures and hazard mitigation. Familiarity with industry standard information management systems used in decommissioning.
