Job Purpose

This job is all about connecting with young audiences and making sure that everybody knows what a great job the BBC does!
The team looks after communications and publicity for Radio 1, 1Xtra, Asian Network, BBC Introducing and BBC Music programmes on TV.
These parts of the BBC have millions of users and are focused on young people, ensuring that the BBC delivers relevant content on the right platform.
The networks are involved with a wide range of content including live radio, podcasts, festivals like Big Weekend or Wireless, YouTube, Insta, TikTok, TV, and more.
In the Assistant Publicist role you will be working on publicity for priority content across the BBC music networks from interviews with the biggest stars to showcases with brand new artists, content that reflects black culture, programmes designed for young British Asians, amazing fresh comedy, and film and TV projects. Recent work has included Radio 1's Sound of 2024, new DJs for 1Xtra, Asian Network Certified, 1Xtra's Hot For 2024, Radio 1's TikTok Takeover on Christmas Day, and Mollie King's brand new Radio 1 podcast Where It's At: A Short History of Girlbands.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

The Assistant Publicist will be involved in planning and delivering PR campaigns, dealing with reputational issues and crises, advising DJs and executives, supporting the team with admin tasks, and leading on individual projects. You will work closely with senior stakeholders, programme makers, commissioners and talent to advise on publicity strategy, plan events and announcements and maximise positive coverage.
This Assistant Publicist role will be working on some exciting projects for Asian Network this year, announcing some exciting new podcast titles with big names, as well as supporting on Radio 1's Big Weekend in May.
The publicist will be part of an out-of-hours on-call rota with colleagues.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

Are you a fan of pop culture, pop music, social media, and youth issues? Are you on your phone all the time? Do you know what's trending right now?

You'll ideally have some experience in publicity or public relations in a high profile organization, across radio, TV and social media.
Have a proven track record of running creative publicity campaigns that are innovative and fun.
A good knowledge of media outlets and ideally contacts at some of those.
We are a very busy team so you really need to be organised and plan ahead whilst being able to juggle multiple projects.
You need to be able to prioritise your workload effectively.
An ability to create engaging social posts and clear ideas on best practice.
An excellent sense of what actually makes 'news' - What is new and interesting? What will get noticed?
You will be able to write engaging copy that is succinct whilst also giving all the information.
You'll have some experience of identifying and effectively managing reputational issues, including providing sound communications advice to colleagues and using varied communications tools to defend and enhance reputation.
