Job Title: Software Engineer Location: Birmingham / Hybrid Salary: £32,000 - £45,000 per annum Position: Permanent, full-time About The Company: The Company is a long-established web and app development agency based in the Jewellery Quarter, specialising in AI integration, SaaS products, apps and portals. Job Role: This is a hands-on, mid-level Software Engineer role with responsibility for delivering complete features and projects. You will work independently with light oversight from a Lead Engineer, delivering projects with a moderate level of technical risk or substantial parts of larger projects. You will own your work from the initial ticket through to a working, supportable feature in production. You will make technical decisions within your area of responsibility and judge when to seek a second opinion. You will raise higher-risk and architecture-level decisions with your lead early, bringing options and a recommendation. Your lead will support you with project-level technical risk. The role has no people-management responsibilities. You are encouraged to support junior engineers informally, while remaining focused on the quality, reliability and clarity of your own work. Your responsibilities Deliver features that are working, tested, documented and in use. Check for defects or unexpected behaviour after delivery and follow through without needing reminders. Make technical decisions that balance maintainability, security, performance and the client's needs. Understand which decisions you can make, which need your lead's input and which require further escalation. Identify risks and trade-offs early. Explain the current position, the impact on the project, what is already handled and what remains unresolved. Bring a proposed course of action so your lead can confirm, adjust or step in, and raise problems while there is still time to act. Build full-stack web and mobile applications, typically involving React Native, SQL-backed APIs and AWS hosting. Be comfortable working in the framework or language each project requires. Write clean, tested, well-structured code that follows team standards. Work collaboratively through Git, pull requests and CI/CD pipelines. Use AI-assisted tools to improve speed and quality. Review and validate their output, taking responsibility for the software you deliver. Keep your lead and project manager informed about progress, implications, resolved and outstanding issues, and any support or decisions you need. Explain technical choices clearly to project managers and, where needed, clients. Document decisions, context and operational knowledge so another engineer can pick up your work without relying on your memory. Identify recurring problems and suggest changes that prevent them. Put practical improvements in place within your area, such as checklists, clearer standards, tests, automation or better ticket templates. Contribute to better tickets, estimates, refinement and delivery flow. Apply lessons from retrospectives to your work. Keep clear ownership, a dated next step, any required decision or escalation, and a backup plan for the work you own. Resolve issues affecting your delivery or make clear who needs to take responsibility. Explain the trade-offs you chose as well as the constraints you faced when reporting on your work. Experience and capabilities You will need: Commercial programming experience consistent with a mid-level engineer, with evidence of delivering features or parts of projects from start to finish. Solid capability in an object-oriented back-end language, with PHP/Laravel strongly preferred, and a modern front-end framework such as React or React Native. TypeScript is desirable. Good working knowledge of SQL and relational database design, and an understanding of MVC and RESTful API principles. Familiarity with Git-based team workflows, code review, automated testing and CI/CD. The ability to solve complex problems and become effective quickly with unfamiliar technologies. Clear written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical colleagues. Evidence of working independently, making informed decisions within your responsibilities, and knowing when and how to seek support. A practical, curious approach to new tools and AI-assisted development, with a willingness to experiment and assess their value through evidence and measurable results. Additional Information: We value a diverse workforce and believe that people from different backgrounds can bring fresh ideas, thinking and approaches to the way we work. Job Title: Junior Software Engineer Location: Birmingham / Hybrid Salary: £28,000 - £35,000 per annum Position: Permanent, full-time About The Company: The Company is a long-established web and app development agency based in the Jewellery Quarter, specialising in AI integration, SaaS products, apps and portals. We build high-quality web and mobile solutions for a wide range of clients, from innovative start-ups to established enterprises. We embrace modern technologies, and have frontier adoption of AI. We take pride in a team culture that values high control, continuous learning, and delivering work we can stand behind. All roles are 'hybrid', meaning we expect our teams to be able to come into the office in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham while working effectively from home. Job Role: We are looking for a Junior Software Engineer with a strong software portfolio who wants to build web and mobile applications and develop their engineering skills. You will work across the front end, back end and database on real client projects from early on. An Engineer or Lead Engineer will review your work closely and help you build software that is tested, documented and ready to run in production. You will follow the agreed architecture and check your approach before starting work. As you demonstrate stronger skills and judgement, you will take on larger tasks with less supervision. This role has no people-management responsibilities. Your responsibilities will include: Building features within the agreed technical approach and checking that your changes work before submitting them for review. Asking for guidance early when you are unsure, bringing your findings and possible approaches to the discussion. Raising problems promptly, explaining what is affected and either resolving them or making clear who needs to help. Applying code-review feedback and understanding the reasoning behind it. Learning our technologies, tools, delivery practices and clients' businesses, including unfamiliar technologies when projects require them. Keeping your lead and project manager informed about completed work, progress, blockers and support you need. Keeping ticket statuses, estimates, time records and pull requests accurate and up to date. Writing clear tickets, commit messages and pull request descriptions that explain what changed and why. Recording technical decisions, setup instructions and operational details so others can pick up your work. Explaining trade-offs and areas of uncertainty when handing work over for review. Working with designers, project managers and other engineers, and helping colleagues where you can. Taking part in scrums, masterclasses and retrospectives, applying what you learn and making practical improvements such as clearer notes, checklists or tests. Method Grid
Senior Front End (Vue.js) Developer
Method Grid Bath, Somerset
Method Grid; one platform to connect knowledge, process and delivery. Founded in 2016 - and following growth-enabling investment in 2021 - we're now a team of nearly twenty. Our platform continues to develop at pace, and we can now count on some of the UK's largest AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) and Professional Services companies as advocate customers. But we've still got work to do. Our ambitions for 2027 and beyond are considerable. Our product roadmap is 'bursting at the seams' with feature ideas that we're keen to build - and we're motivated to further harness AI and ML to help our customers deliver projects consistently and compliantly. This role will be offered remotely. We have tried-and-tested practices and processes in place that make this work seamlessly. However, we do commit to co-locating once a quarter, for our all-team Summits. These are based in Bath (there could be worse places to visit!) and brings the whole Method Grid team together for two days. If you're interested in joining an ambitious, Values-lead team, then read on The Role Whilst part of a broader team, you'll find yourself working closely with a member of our backend team on feature releases. We push out new releases regularly and we've some ambitious plans (significant releases) for our platform in 2027 and beyond. In terms of technologies, a solid grounding in HTML, CSS and JavaScript is essential. We've spent considerable time and effort in updating our application in Vue.js, so strong experience in this area would be essential. As a Senior, you will have experience of component-based architecture and Agile engineering practices such as TDD (possibly also BDD). It would be beneficial if you had some exposure to full-stack development - particularly around debugging back end issues (PHP, Python) - but this is secondary to the front end requirements. About You You may have already worked in a start-up/scale-up technology business. It isn't essential - but we are looking for curious minds who are keen to explore new technologies. To the extent we allocate 10% of our development teams' week for pure R&D. We have a tight-knit, high-performing development team already. One of the core reasons for this is that they support each other unconditionally. Where a team member may have a gap in knowledge, someone will pro-actively step-in to provide guidance. This should also be part of your behaviour. Working for a start-up/scale-up technology firm should be something that builds some excitement in you - otherwise, why do it? We're at a stage of our growth journey where the future could be genuinely exciting, but it will take hard work to get to the next stage. As mentioned, you will have advanced skills and experience in Vue.js, coupled with deep knowledge of HTML, CSS and accessibility. Why Join? Method Grid is an early-stage SaaS platform with an ever-growing list of impressive customers. We've recently secured significant investment both to accelerate the build of our product and to hire a team of passionate experts to deliver an outstanding customer experience. It's going to be an exciting journey. We believe we have a unique product that will only get better. We celebrate diversity and how it can empower a high-performing team. But the one thing that does unify us is our values. As we grow, we intend to keep our values front-&-centre. We have a great (and growing) team of co-workers who embody the cultural values of: (highly collaborative) Central Rock (client-centricity) Never Settle (never ending pursuit of excellence coupled with humility to recognise we never get there) Egos at the Door (take our work seriously but not ourselves) Fast Craft (ruthless speed when it comes to product development)
