Job title: Spacecraft Materials and Process Engineer

Overview
A vacancy for a Materials Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space to work on space flight hardware in Stevenage, within the Materials Department.
You will have the opportunity to work on unique projects, such as Mars Sample Return Earth Return Orbiter, Biomass, Eurostar Neo and OneSat.
You will provide technical solutions to materials related issues which arise during the design, manufacture and test of flight hardware and the team mission of ensuring correct materials qualification for mission specific requirements.
Tasks and Accountabilities
With your knowledge and experience in Materials Engineering, you will be routinely sought by both Design and Manufacturing teams, as will the identification of new materials and processes for future applications. The focus of the role will be at spacecraft level activities.
This means that you will be the interface with customers such as the European Space Agency (ESA).
This requires a good understanding of a range of spacecraft equipment, their sub-systems and related materials and process technologies. A strong understanding of metallic, non-metallic and organics is essential.
Working within a team of specialists or individually, you will interface with people at all levels - Shop Floor, Project Teams, through to Management and Customers.
Provide leadership in the choice of Materials and Processes (M&P) to the Project Team.
Critique qualification, test plans and data analysis of data and approve test reports
Support non-conformances which will include investigations into failures
Support to R&D activities
Propose and implement activities which will contribute to the M&P improvement plan
Authorise changes to Parts Materials and Processes (PMP) documents
Chair Materials and Process Review Boards (MPCB) and manage technical performance of subcontractors, suppliers and in-house manufacturing
Provide M&P leadership to the Project Team at various Project review milestones (Spacecraft level PDR, CDR, QAR etc.)
Support, coach and guide junior Materials Engineers, Graduates and Interns
Compile database of qualified Materials and Processes used in the manufacture of satellites.
Experience and Skills
You will ideally hold a Materials Science, Physics degree or related degree.
Experience working as a Materials and Processing Engineer is essential as in knowledge of properties and applications of metallic, non-metallics and organic materials for use in a space environment
You will also have strong communication and interpersonal skills with experience of working in customer facing roles
Knowledge of reasons for choosing M&P for space/ aerospace applications.
Demonstrable skill for conducting qualification test programmes for specific applications.
Demonstrable experience of various joining methods (welding, soldering, brazing, adhesive bonding).
Working knowledge of surface treatments/ finishes
Practical application of Spacecraft Parts Materials and Processes (PMP) requirements - ECSS.Q.ST.70C
Able to analyse and interpret data, draw conclusions and make recommendations
Facilitation skills for leading problem solving and risk analysis
Fluent English is required.
