Overview of job

The Commercial Data Science team in Global is recruiting for a Junior Data Scientist to join an experienced team of data scientists and analysts. Working in fast-paced environment and utilising the latest technology in the data analysis and science field, the role will be responsible for modelling, analysing and communicating to business partners key metrics to drive commercial success as well as managing and constantly improving our forecasting and optimisation algorithms.

Working and collaborating with other departments within the business (DAX, Data Engineering, Commercial Operations, Outdoor and Insights Teams amongst others) the role will additionally be responsible for delivering analysis that answers business questions around, but not limited to, client behaviour, product efficiency, pricing and inventory efficiency.

We are looking for a person with analytical skills and mindset that takes keen curiosity about data, the insight they can provide and the opportunities they unlock.

The role gives the opportunity to work in a well-established analytics and data science team in a fun, informal environment, working together with hard-working, likeminded people that have "a thing" for data.

The role is based over our two offices in Central London (primarily in our Leicester Square office but also our site at Holborn)

Measures of success -

In the first few months, you would have:

  • Understanding of our business operating model in all main business streams: Audio, Digital, Outdoor.
  • Knowledge of our main data warehouses and data workflows that we are working with.
  • Exposure to existing analytical solutions and tools.
  • Delivered Ad-Hoc analysis and insight for various critical business questions.
  • Understanding of our new machine learning based digital audio proposition

Responsibilities of the role

  • Deploy Operational Research (OR) techniques and modelling to enable organic revenue growth for our business.
  • Contribution to projects based around machine learning or mathematical optimisation (depending on experience, interest, and skillset). By way of examples:

Machine Learning:

  • Collaboration with our Digital Ad Exchange department (DAX) to establish an analytical framework for growth in our connected listenership revenue stream.
  • Research and implement supervised and unsupervised learning techniques to improve Global's internal business processes and propose new products to market.
  • Actively work on prototyping and evaluating new and current machine learning algorithms sitting behind the scenes with Global.

Mathematical Optimisation:

  • Enhance our planning optimisation algorithms; analyse how our sales team use such tools and deliver improvements.
  • Identify and act on opportunities for new areas of prescriptive analytics, with a particular focus on optimisation techniques.
  • Actively work on prototyping and evaluation of new planning optimisation algorithms within Global.
  • Engineer and implement Revenue Management (RM) capabilities for our outdoor trading systems, ensuring we deliver on evolving business challenges.
  • Partner management - understanding how the output from the team can be used and have a positive effect in downstream business processes.
  • Deliver on ad-hoc analysis briefs answering critical business questions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Swapping between data science projects and learning new skillsets to adapt and meet Commercial Data Science and wider business needs.
  • Contribution to the team spirit. We are a supportive and a high performing group and looking for someone who will bring curiosity and active involvement to the way that we work together with each other and the rest of the business.

What you will need

The ideal candidate will be proactive and willing to develop and implement innovative solutions, capable of the following:

  • Demonstrable understanding and experience in predictive and forecasting methodologies.
  • Experience in or exposure to principles of mathematical optimisation.
  • A believer in patterns and the importance they play in decision-making. Able to extract trends and insights from complex and incomplete data sets.
  • Experience in programming languages (such as R, Python) - generally someone who gets excited by code.
  • Experience in data manipulation and exposure in relevant tools (SQL and Alteryx or others).
  • Passionate about data and experience in visualisation (Tableau experience would be desirable but not essential).
  • An exceptional eye for detail, ability to work under pressure and deliver time-sensitive work to a high standard.
  • A professional manner with the ability to closely interact with senior management.
  • Ability to explain analysis to non-numerate people and empathise with their point of view.
