Anglian Water offers a flexible working environment with this role being suited to a mix of office and home working. Your base location will be either be in our office in Peterborough or Huntingdon, with travel to sites in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire.

Anglian Water is developing three long term water supply strategic resource option (SRO) projects: the Fens Reservoir which is being jointly developed with Cambridge Water; and the Lincolnshire Reservoir and associated Anglian to Affinity Transfer system which are currently being developed jointly with Affinity Water. These SROs are Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) being planned and developed during AMP7 so that they are ready to commence construction in late AMP8.

The Head of Engineering & Design role will provide the technical and design leadership to progress these NSIP schemes through the Development Consent Order (DCO) planning process. Reporting to the SRO Programme Manager, the role will drive the technical and engineering design aspects of the programme for the development of the reservoirs, associated water treatment works and transfer infrastructure assets. The role will identify scopes for work packages; tender, evaluate and challenge proposals; and review and approve technical outputs. They will ensure the technical outputs meet the requirements of the RAPID regulatory gated process and are delivered within the agreed budget and timescale.

The Head of Engineering & Design will work within the wider SRO leadership team supporting the programme and project managers alongside environmental, consenting and stakeholder consultation leaders. They will direct technical experts and external consultants to understand the needs, develop and execute the strategy and achieve the required outcomes within approved financial allowances to achieve successful DCOs and set the projects up for their follow-on delivery phases.

What does it take to be the Head of Engineering & Design?

Degree in relevant technical discipline (e.g. engineering / environmental / scientific)

Significant experience leading technical programmes for the development of major infrastructure projects

Experience of major project promotion through planning consent processes

In-depth engineering and technical knowledge, including ability to drive carbon reductions / net zero targets

Ability to drive innovation and efficiency in the design process

Experience implementing 'safety in design' processes

Leadership - self & team (both internal and external), able to inspire and drive excellence in project outputs

Ability to innovate, challenge and negotiate to find optimum solution
