Summary
The Risk Assurance and Fraud team lead on the production and embedding of DITs Risk, Assurance and (Counter) Fraud Policies, processes and reporting frameworks. The team provides advice and support to business areas on compliance and best practice and are key in embedding processes and developing a strong control culture in DIT.
As Risk Manager, you will own the directorate risk reporting process across the department, work with and coordinate the risk leads network, and support the ongoing development of the Risk Management Function throughout DIT. The Risk Manager will support a range of work, including the regular reporting frameworks, and development of plans to embed good practice, alongside governance activities undertaken by the team. While the primary focus of the role will be on risk, the Risk Manager will also contribute to the Counter Fraud and Assurance activities, and will play an active role in developing frameworks and build expertise in the areas across DIT.
The Risk Manager will report to the Risk Lead and will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the routine risk reporting to our committee structure, and will providing advice and support to relevant stakeholders, and ensuring that strict quality standards are applied across all workstreams.
Job description
- The Risk Manager will take responsibility for the monthly strategic risk reporting to the DIT committee structure and, conduct quarterly assessment, analysis and assurance of Directorate risk returns within DIT. This analysis will provide informed and insightful narrative for board briefs, reports as well as form the baseline for evidence-based challenge and support to Directors.
- With the team, provide risk input into corporate requests such as the quarterly Outcome Delivery Plan Performance and Risk.
- Plan and, with the wider team, lead on Directorate risk feedback sessions to provide a challenge function to develop and improve risk practise across DIT, and to provide SME input to the Assurance statement process.
- Assist in the development of plans to further develop risk management, assurance and fraud across DIT, including planned risk lead training and development pathways and a risk and assurance reporting system.
- Scan and understand industry best practice, exploring opportunities to further build risk, assurance and fraud maturity within DIT.
Hybrid working
The role will be based in either Darlington or London . You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) inanoffice, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

Responsibilities
Essential Criteria
- Strong analytical thinking skills
Desirable Criteria
- A background and experience in either risk management, project management, governance or assurance is preferred for this role, along with a track record of engagement with a wide variety of senior stakeholders.
- Project Management (e.g. APM, PRINCE2) and / or Risk Management (e.g. MoR) qualification/ or Fraud/ Audit qualification and/ or Accountancy qualification.
- Development and implementation of organisational risk and assurance frameworks, policies, and procedures, or leading on risk across a Portfolio of projects/programmes.
Personal Attributes & Skills
- Able to work collaboratively, influence and manage change across the DIT Business Groups and portfolio to support the delivery of high quality, embedded practices, and processes.
- Proficient facilitator of multidisciplinary groups with excellent problem-solving skills. Able to effectively options appraise and identify the most appropriate route forward.
- Excellent drafting, communication and MS Excel skills. Effective presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex information to those from outside the team.
- Able to use a range of IT equipment and software to analyse information and produce intelligent and engaging reports.
