Summary
DIT is the international economic department responsible for bringing together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade and investment and help businesses succeed.
The department is currently working on four priority outcomes:
- Securing world class Free Trade Agreements
- Championing the rules based international trading system
- Supporting UK businesses to take full advantage of trade opportunities to facilitate UK exports
- Delivering economic growth to all nations of the UK by attracting and retaining inward investment
The role sits within the English Regions Directorate, which is the face of DIT across England and has a central part to play in several key initiatives, including the Levelling Up economic performance across the UK.
Job description
The successful candidate will join DITs Southern England Region (SER) team to promote the advanced engineering sector. You will be responsible for increasing investment into the South West to stimulate economic growth and job creation. You will do this through:
- Promoting investment opportunities
- Championing the region as a place for advanced engineering businesses to invest
- Developing and maintaining a network of existing investors to support business growth
- Working with a range of partners across the world (internal and external to DIT) and industry bodies to encourage businesses to invest in the region
The role will focus on advanced engineering, including future mobility and digital manufacturing. You will be responsible for pursuing and landing investment across the sector, from research and development through to manufacturing and commercialisation.
Key Accountabilities
The Southern England Regional Team works closely with overseas businesses, matching them to opportunities and supporting and advising them on setting up or expanding their business in the South West.
This role will require you to work with both new and existing investors by:
- Being the expert and taking leadership of the advanced engineering portfolio
- Developing and implementing an investment plan to achieve agreed inward investment objectives
- Building a network across DITs global and partners
- Representing the South West advanced engineering sector at the UK and overseas events
- Supporting the regions local enterprise partnerships (LEPs), combined authority, universities, industry bodies, DITs overseas and UK based teams to showcase the core capabilities of South West
- Developing and managing a portfolio of sector propositions
Hybrid Working
The role will be based in either Bristol, Cambridge, Guildford or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.
Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.
Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) inanoffice, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.
Appointments will be made to candidates in merit order based on location preferences.

Essential Criteria
- Experience of attracting and securing foreign direct investment
- Knowledge and experience of working with or within the advanced manufacturing sector
- Excellent communication skills
- Building and managing broad networks
- Managing relationships at senior level
- Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with others. This role is part of a virtual team with colleagues based in the UK and overseas
- Ability to manage conflicting demands and priorities, working at pace, flexibly and under pressure to make effective decisions
- Ability to travel regularly around the South West and occasionally internationally
Desirable Criteria
- Strong commercial awareness with customer facing/commercial experience
- International experience or understanding of the key global trends and opportunities in the advanced engineering sectors and how this shapes the environment for inward investment

Selection process details
