Company mission In the future, almost everything we consume will simply materialise on our doorsteps - what we call "e-commerce" today will simply be "commerce" tomorrow. But if we continue on today's trajectory, the growth of e-commerce risks damaging the environment, alienating our communities, and straining the bottom-line for small businesses. Relay is an e-commerce-native logistics network. We are built from the ground up for environmental, social, and economic sustainability. By building from the ground up we are able to entirely rethink both the middle and last mile enabling us to reduce the number of miles driven to deliver each parcel, lower carbon emissions, and lower costs, all while channelling funds to community members. At the same time, we're fixing the last broken aspect of e-commerce for consumers: delivery. As shoppers, we should have complete control over when and how we receive our purchases, and we should be able to return unwanted items as easily as we ordered them. That's why whenever you buy from a merchant powered by Relay, you'll be able to reschedule your delivery at any time. And if you don't like what you ordered, at the tap of a button we'll send someone to pick it up. To orchestrate this complex ballet, Relay relies on a wide range of technologies, from advanced routing and planning to sophisticated user experiences that guide our team members on the ground. About the role As a highly operational business, we rely on data science to power nearly every part of our network - from forecasting parcel volumes, to pricing and planning courier capacity, to understanding and improving the economics of our operation. We're hiring a Senior Data Scientist to help us optimise our middle mile operation and model the growth, performance, and economics of our pitstop network. This role spans across domains, touching forecasting, operations, and commercial planning, and is ideal for someone who thrives on applying models in ambiguous, real-world environments. You'll work with squads across routing, sortation, first mile, last mile, marketplace, and commercial functions; you'll focus on middle mile optimisation, pitstop expansion, and understanding the long-term financial value of our physical network . You'll also bring together data from across the business, often fragmented or messy, and use smart tooling, automation, and AI to transform it into usable insight. You'll need to be hands-on and pragmatic; it's a high-impact role with strong exposure to leadership and decision-making across the business. What you'll do Model and improve the cost, quality, and efficiency of middle mile operations, including vehicle use, timings, and handover reliability Partner with marketplace and ops teams to optimise driver acquisition, targeting, and pricing for the middle mile Optimise pitstop expansion in line with volume growth, capacity, and service levels Model pitstop-level LTV and unit economics to support capital investment and performance tracking Collaborate with other data scientists to support geo-sequencing, zone design, and integration with routing models In partnership with MLE and Staff Data Scientists, orchestrate and automate model pipelines in production Act as a thought partner for operations, commercial, and finance leads - bringing a scientific lens to planning and network growth What we're looking for 6+ years of experience in data science, with a strong record of delivering models into production Deep experience with Python and SQL Strong foundations in statistics and probability, with experience applying them in operational and/or financial contexts Comfort working in ambiguity and navigating messy or incomplete data Effective communication skills - you can explain technical results clearly to non-technical audiences Comfort working across functions and disciplines to drive impact Nice to haves Experience working in logistics, marketplaces, or similarly complex operational businesses Exposure to business planning, pricing, or commercial decision-making; experience with forecasting, scenario, and financial modelling (including partnering with Finance and Commercial teams and their models (in Excel, Google Sheets Familiarity with geospatial data Experience in fast-scaling startups or operational teams We're flexible on experience - if you're an experienced and pragmatic data scientist, with a track record of driving impact, we'd love to hear from you. What we offer 25 days annual leave per year (plus bank holidays). Equity package. Bupa Global: Business Premier Health Plan - Comprehensive global health insurance with direct access to specialists, dental care, mental health support and more. Contributory pension scheme. Hybrid working Free membership of the gym in our co-working space in London. Cycle-to-work scheme A culture of learning and growth, where you're encouraged to take ownership from day one. Born out of numerical physics and proven in Formula One, we help our customers radically improve their concepts and designs, transform their engineering processes and drive operational product performance. We do this in some of the most advanced and important industries of our time - including Space, Aerospace, Medical Devices, Additive Manufacturing, Electric Vehicles, Motorsport, and Renewables. Our work creates positive impact for society, be it by improving the design of artificial hearts, reducing CO2 emissions from aircraft and road vehicles, and increasing the performance of wind turbines. We are a rapidly growing company but prefer to fly under the radar to protect our customers' confidentiality. We are about to take the next leap in building out our technology platform and product offering. In this context, we are looking for a capable and enthusiastic Software Engineer to join our team. If all of this sounds exciting to you, we would love to talk (even if you don't tick all the boxes). The Role We are looking for passionate Senior software engineers to join us in building the cutting-edge platform that empowers Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers and Simulation Engineers to create, train, and deploy physics-informed models at PhysicsX. You'll take ownership of your work from implementation to production, ensuring quality, scalability, and observability at every step. Gather and leverage domain knowledge and experience from the Data Scientists and Simulation Engineers using your product. Lead and own initiatives with a high degree of autonomy. What you will bring to the table A passion for the evolving craft of software engineering. The ability to work collaboratively and effectively in cross-functional teams. Proficiency in both Python and/or Go. A willingness to take ownership from implementation to production, including testing, containerisation, continuous integration and delivery, authentication/authorisation, telemetry/observability/monitoring. A working understanding of messaging in event-driven systems, which implies some experience using tools such as NATS, RabbitMQ, or Kafka for example. Some experience, professional or otherwise, developing applications for Kubernetes. CKAD is a plus, but by no means a requirement. What we offer Be part of something larger: Make an impact and meaningfully shape an early-stage company. Work on some of the most exciting and important topics there are. Do something you can be proud of. Work with a fun group of colleagues that support you, challenge you and help you grow. We come from many different backgrounds, but what we have in common is the desire to operate at the very top of our fields and solve truly challenging problems in science and engineering. If you are similarly capable, caring and driven, you'll find yourself at home here. Experience a truly flat hierarchy. Voicing your ideas is not only welcome but encouraged, especially when they challenge the status quo. Work sustainably, striking the right balance between work and personal life. Receive a competitive compensation and equity package, in addition to plenty of perks such as generous vacation and parental leave, complimentary office food, as well as fun outings and events. Work in a flexible setting, at our lovely London Shoreditch office, and a good proportion from home if so desired. Get the opportunity to occasionally visit our customers' engineering sites and experience first-hand how our work is transforming their ways of working.

Applications deadline: The final date for submissions is 25 April 2025 . However, we review applications on a rolling basis and encourage early submissions. ABOUT APOLLO RESEARCH The capabilities of current AI systems are evolving at a rapid pace. While these advancements offer tremendous opportunities, they also present significant risks, such as the potential for deliberate misuse or the deployment of sophisticated yet misaligned models. At Apollo Research , our primary concern lies with deceptive alignment, a phenomenon where a model appears to be aligned but is, in fact, misaligned and capable of evading human oversight. Our approach focuses on behavioral model evaluations, which we then use to audit real-world models. We also combine black-box approaches with applied interpretability. In our evaluations, we focus on LM agents, i.e. LLMs with agentic scaffolding similar to AIDE or SWE agent . We also study model organisms in controlled environments (see our security policies ), e.g. to better understand capabilities related to scheming. At Apollo, we aim for a culture that emphasizes truth-seeking, being goal-oriented, giving and receiving constructive feedback, and being friendly and helpful. If you're interested in more details about what it's like working at Apollo, you can find more information here . ABOUT THE TEAM The current evals team consists of Mikita Balesni , Jérémy Scheurer , Alex Meinke , Rusheb Shah , Bronson Schoen , Andrei Matveiakin, Felix Hofstätter, and Axel Højmark . Marius Hobbhahn manages and advises the team, though team members lead individual projects. WE ARE LOOKING FOR THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS IN A STRONG CANDIDATE Responsibilities: Maintain and extend our internal library for building and running language model evaluations. Work closely with researchers to understand what challenges they face. Rapidly prototype, iterate on and ship useful features to increase their productivity. Collaboratively iterate on the vision and priorities for the internal software stack. Advocate for good software design practices and the general health of the codebase. Keep up-to-date with the latest approaches to implementing evals frameworks and LLM scaffolding (e.g. open-source projects and research papers). If interested, you can also run well-scoped research projects yourself, e.g. build an evaluation or do capability elicitation for an existing evaluation. Required Skills: At least 2 years of FTE-equivalent experience in software development with Python. Strong candidates may also have: Note that we welcome and value applications with different backgrounds. We encourage you to apply even if none of the following apply to you. Experience in rapidly iterating on software products in close collaboration with users. For example, you have built software tools for internal or external users for 1+ years. Strong communication skills and user/researcher empathy to understand and address their needs. You enjoy close in-person collaboration and pair programming. Experience building organization-internal tools. For example, you have led the efforts of an organization-internal tool for at least one 6-month project. Representative projects: Implement an internal job orchestration tool which allows researchers to run evals on remote machines. Build out an eval runs database which stores all historical results in a queryable format. Implement LLM agents to automate internal software engineering and research tasks. Design and implement research tools for loading, viewing and interacting with transcripts from eval runs. Establish internal patterns and conventions for building new types of evaluations within the Inspect framework. Optimize the CI pipeline to reduce execution time and eliminate flaky tests. We want to emphasize that people who feel they don't fulfill all of these characteristics but think they would be a good fit for the position nonetheless are strongly encouraged to apply . We believe that excellent candidates can come from a variety of backgrounds and are excited to give you opportunities to shine. EVALS TEAM WORK. The evals team focuses on the following efforts: As a software engineer, you work closely with all of our research scientists by building a high-quality software stack to support all of the following efforts. We have recently switched to Inspect as our primary evals framework. If you want to prepare for the SWE role, we recommend playing around with Inspect. Conceptual work on safety cases for scheming, for example, our work on evaluation-based safety cases for scheming Building evaluations for scheming-related properties , such as situational awareness or deceptive reasoning. Conducting evaluations on frontier models and publishing the results either to the general public or a target audience such as AI developers or governments, for example, our work in OpenAI's o1-preview system card . Creating model organisms and demonstrations of behavior related to deceptive alignment, e.g. exploring the influence of goal-directedness on scheming. Designing and evaluating AI control protocols. We have not started these efforts yet but intend to work on them starting Q2 2025. LOGISTICS Start Date: Target of 2-3 months after the first interview. Time Allocation: Full-time. The technical interviews will be closely related to tasks the candidate would do on the job. There are no leetcode-style general coding interviews. If you want to prepare for the interviews, we suggest working on hands-on LLM evals projects (e.g. as suggested in our starter guide ), such as building LM agent evaluations in Inspect .
