About the job
Summary
The UKs independent trade policy is developing apace. The UK has struck over 60 continuity trade agreements inherited from the EU and two Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) from scratch with Australia and New Zealand. This is an unprecedented achievement at unprecedented pace.
The Competition and Goods (C&G) team at the Department for International Trade has been proudly central to all these agreements. We have successfully delivered UK government objectives in some of the most politically sensitive and economically valuable areas of the FTA negotiations. Our wider team of almost 70 is currently negotiating the next generation of FTAs across tariffs, rules of origin, customs, agriculture and competition chapters in conjunction with Whitehall partners.
The Rules of Origin Team which you would be responsible for leads the policy development and negotiation of FTA origin rules. These rules determine whether a good is eligible for preferential tariffs under a trade agreement and are a vital determinant of goods market access, and as such, of the economic value of trade agreements.
You will need excellent analytical and decision-making skills, including understanding of the Governments political considerations, the interests of partner countries and of UK businesses and consumers and so will need to be comfortable with using economic evidence to identify the best outcome for the UK.
To convert this into UK government policy, backed by all Government Departments and their ministers, you will need to form close working relationships with other teams in DIT and in Whitehall particularly DEFRA and BEIS - as well as senior DIT officials.
You will be an excellent teamworker and influencer, able to lead and support a cross-Whitehall team in their face-to-face negotiations with partner countries.
In addition to leading and developing your team, you are also expected to work as an engaged member of the G6/ SCS senior leadership team for Competition and Goods. This includes delivering a corporate portfolio for the division, working closely with the team of Deputy Directors. The precise nature of this portfolio will be determined on appointment.
