Marine Engineering & Systems (ME&S) is a business unit within the Marine Division of Babcock International Group. ME&S is a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine, system engineering, electrical engineering design and project support services to the marine and defence markets worldwide. ME&S have vast experience in engineering, construction, concept design and through life support for a wide range of front line naval and auxiliary support vessels.
We offer a vast array of engineering challenges, from complex ship design, to supporting the existing RN fleet through life, as well as consultancy services. With the majority of our projects focussed on surface ships and submarines, we also support the commercial sector and navies from overseas continuing to pursue numerous opportunities in a global market.
Who we are looking for?
We are looking for Discipline Lead (Department Head) for Safety and Environmental Engineering to manage the current team of over 20 Safety and Environmental Practitioners.
The Head of Safety and Environmental Engineering is a key role within the ME&S Business Unit and you will be part of the Leadership Team responsible for the safe planning and execution of design tasking. As a senior leader, you will be expected to work closely and in collaboration with your immediate Head of Department peers to deliver improved safety performance, delivery performance and ultimately increased productivity. You will be able to work closely and positively with a number of stakeholders, including immediate customers, other RN stakeholders.
What will you be doing?
As the Discipline Lead, the main purpose of your role is to include but not be limited to:
Provide expert professional safety and environmental engineering support to surface ship, submarine and commercial projects;
Act as Project Technical Authority for tasking as delegated by the Chief Engineer;
Provide governance and assurance to Safety and Environmental projects;
Provide expert safety and environmental case input to non-conformances and design changes for specified systems;
Support the members of Safety Engineering Group (SEG) in developing non-nuclear safety and environmental assessments or cases;
Liaise with engineering and design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of design, including supporting design reviews;
Plan and control of work to time, cost and quality;
Provide expertise and support in own engineering specialisation to other members of the safety team;
Production of safety and environmental cases.
The experience you will bring
The Discipline Lead is required to have an extensive engineering background in a relevant discipline and extensive experience of safety and environmental assessment/management processes that is specifically directed towards systems or product safety and environmental assessment in the maritime arena. This is not a Health & Safety or SHEF type role, it requires an extensive engineering background in a relevant field.
You will be Degree qualified in an engineering discipline or extensive experience; Hold the Defence Maritime Regulator's (DMR) Ship Safety & Environmental Management Training (SEMT)/Ship Safety Management Office (SSMO) Certificate or similar; Also, be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. IMechE, RINA, IET, SARS etc.) and hold Chartered status.
In addition, you will have the following:
Extensive experience of working with MOD processes and publications, in particular: POSMS, POEMS, DSA01 & 02, DMR (JSP 430), JSP 418 & Def Stan 00-56 etc;
Chairmanship and recording of Technical meetings and authoring of Technical reports;
Experience of constructing a safety argument in accordance with the First Sea Lord's Safety Argument, Goal Structured Notation, Claims/Argument/Evidence etc.
Experience of facilitating/undertaking Hazard Identification and Assessment exercises
Good knowledge of Naval Engineering in RN ships and/or submarines;
Experienced in multidisciplinary engineering environment, ideally management experience;
Knowledge of environmental issues & legislation;
You will need to satisfy security requirements. This will require you to hold or be eligible/capable of achieving 'Security Check' (SC) clearance.
