Job Description

City of Portsmouth College has been formed by the merger of Portsmouth College and Highbury College and was formally constituted on 1 August 2021.

The newly formed College will give students of all ages even greater flexibility with their programmes and access to dedicated subject facilities at the different campus locations. The joint organisation will also expand a uniquely flexible curriculum offer within the city of Portsmouth, comprising A Levels, vocational diplomas, apprenticeships and higher education qualifications.

Job Title: Workshop Technician

Hours: 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year

Contract: Permanent

Salary: £20,445.43

Location: Northarbour Training Centre

The Workshop technician for Construction crafts is responsible to the Head of Centre for providing high quality support in the Workshop in order to enable the College to meet the above broad objectives. Team working and communications within an overall approach that values people will be of key importance.

Some of the main roles and responsibilities are:

  • Provision of all necessary materials/equipment to support the day to day running of Construction trade workshops.
  • To comply with all relevant Health and Safety regulations and assist in the implementation of the College's Health and Safety Policy
  • Ordering of the necessary tools / materials and receiving goods, to ensure the smooth running of Construction trades in conjunction with the Programme Leads
  • Maintenance of yard area, equipment/ materials and storage areas in a safe, clean and tidy state.
  • Checking inventories of materials / tools/equipment at periodic times in conjunction with the programme leads/ workshop instructors/ assessors.

The role requires an individual who has well developed organisational, communication and team working skills. They must also be able to meet targets and deadlines. The role is for 37 hours per week, 52 weeks per year based at our Northarbour Training Centre.

  • You will need a valid forklift operations certificate
  • Evidence of recent industry experience (commitment to ongoing professional updating and development)
  • Labouring experience / Knowledge of the industry
  • Ability to work as an effective member of a team
  • A recognised trade qualification is desirable
  • Be flexible and self-motivated with a dedication to student achievement and quality.
