Job Description

City of Portsmouth College has been formed by the merger of Portsmouth College and Highbury College and was formally constituted on 1 August 2021.

The newly formed College will give students of all ages even greater flexibility with their programmes and access to dedicated subject facilities at the different campus locations. The joint organisation will also expand a uniquely flexible curriculum offer within the city of Portsmouth, comprising A Levels, vocational diplomas, apprenticeships and higher education qualifications.

Job Title: British Sign Language Support Worker Translator

Hours: 23.05 hours per week, 36 weeks per year

Contract: Fixed Term (1 academic year)

Location: Tangier Road

The BSL Support Worker is responsible for supporting deaf students, helping them to communicate with their teachers and other students. They will use a variety of support strategies and communication support methods to match the individuals' needs and preferences

Some of the main roles and responsibilities for this position are:

  • To enable equality of access to information and education, to meet the needs of learners.
  • To empower the learner by the BSL Support Workers use of a range of appropriate strategies of support, encouraging the development of the individual learner within educational, social, linguistic, and cultural contexts.
  • To consider the needs of the learner within the context of their peer group, and to provide appropriate communication strategies, from a range of skills, helping to facilitate the successful integration of the group.
  • To provide access to a range of learning materials using appropriate communication methods to match the needs of the individual learner.
  • To respond to all communication requirements that may arise in the learning environment and with Assistive Technologies, and to implement, review and adapt strategies as necessary.

The role requires an individual who has well developed organisational, communication and team working skills. They must also be able to meet targets and deadlines. The role is for 23.05 hours per week, 36 weeks per year based at Tangier Road.

  • You will need a Level 3 BSL qualification or a Level 3 with extensive experience
  • Experience in supporting deaf learners within an educational environment
  • Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written) and BSL
