Please note, these roles are provided in partnership with the Government's Kickstarter Jobs Scheme. To qualify for this scheme you must meet the following criteria: Aged 16 - 24 yrs old Be receiving Universal Credit Eligible to work in the UK.
Interested in a future career in Life Sciences? This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience and skills in a lab environment. This 6-month placement will work closely with an experienced mentor in the lab helping to ensure our lab runs smoothly, organising and ordering stock, and managing equipment upkeep whilst learning about the interesting work we do at Abcam. Following training you will also gain further support to learn scientific techniques.
Based on the Biomedical campus at Addenbrooke's Cambridge, these roles provides a fantastic opportunity to develop scientific and organisational skills within a supportive team and an inclusive work environment.
For health and safety reasons this role is not suitable for candidates under 18 years of age.
Roles & Responsibilities:
* Contribute to the day-to-day running of laboratory operations, including but not limited to, monitoring of consumables levels, preparing reagents, maintaining the biological inventory.
* Contribute to additional activities within the team, as required.
* Maintain high quality standards during experimental processes and record keeping. Abide by laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep accurate Batch Manufacturing Records (BMRs)
* Help maintain a safe and efficient working environment in the laboratory, ensure the safety of colleagues & visitors and comply with Health and Safety (H&S) policies
There are 5 individual roles on offer, and depending on the group the position is placed in the additional duties include:
* Performing mammalian cell cultures, including adherent and suspension lines, including compound treatments.
* Performing cell fixation, including adherent and suspension lines and performing basic Immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry experiments.
* Preparing samples for Western blot and Immunohistochemistry, performing Western blots and supporting immunohistochemistry experiments
* Expressing proteins at milligram scale in mammalian or bacterial cell systems, protein lyophilisation.
* Expressing proteins at milligram scale in mammalian or bacterial cell systems, ensure proteins are of high-quality using protein analytical techniques.
About you
You will be educated to GCSE level in English and Maths; a GCSE in Science is desirable but not essential.
You will be an enthusiastic learner, with good organisational skills and attention to detail. Experience of performing in a team environment would also be an advantage. An ability to apply a good scientific rationale to problems and to analyse and draw conclusions from data are important for these roles (in particular roles 4 and 5).
