Location: Huntingdon (and site locations as required)

Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 depending on experience + company car

If so then we have an exciting and rewarding role for you! We are looking for an ambitious, driven and talented individual to join the Alpheus team as our Senior Designer

Alpheus (the commercial arm of Anglian Water Group) are a successful designer, builder and operator of water and wastewater assets, delivering compliant, cost effective, and reliable water and wastewater solutions for almost thirty years. We are continuing to grow our high-performance organisation both centrally in Huntingdon and across major sites in the UK.

What will you be doing?

Alpheus offer industrial and commercial customers a comprehensive range of independent specialist water & wastewater process solutions and asset management services, tailored to meet their needs.

Alpheus is in the process of a growth plan securing major design and build contracts, as well as operation and maintenance contracts, with a healthy pipeline of sales opportunities both short and long term.

We are therefore looking for an experienced and versatile Senior Designer to develop and deliver all

design aspects of these major capital projects to the required specification, safety considerations,

profitability, and commercial standards.

Main roles and responsibilities include:

  • Working with members of Alpheus' Engineering and Commercial Teams, you are responsible for providing design leadership, producing all design deliverables for water and wastewater treatment schemes with values up to £5M, across tendering, detailed design, and implementation stages, including:
    • Process design (Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, control philosophy, equipment specification etc), ultimately leading to commercial Process Guarantees
    • Plant Layout (plans, sections, general arrangements)
    • Design requirements and specification for the civil and MEICA aspects of a scheme
  • Carry out high level appraisal and optioneering of conceptual and outline designs at tender stage to create innovative and efficient design solutions capable of winning tenders.
  • Represent the company at tender evaluations and customer discussions to help sell the benefits and features of approach, working collaboratively with customer engineering resources to help demonstrate credibility and form strong and mutually beneficial relationships.
  • Develop design briefs, specification, and scope of work for specialist process technologies (e.g. anaerobic digestion), equipment suppliers, and site installation work (civil and MEICA)
  • Review, validate, and challenge design submissions from expert third parties such as process technology partners, equipment suppliers, and civil & MEICA subcontractors, ensuring design briefs are met, engineering specifications are correct, and design concepts are efficient and optimised.
  • Develop commissioning plans and participate in commissioning work of the installed treatment plants, ensuring all functions are as designed and all issues are identified and resolved.
  • Take ownership of all designs, ensuring they are robust, cost effective, and comply with client requirements, national / local standards, and CDM regulations. Take ownership of Process Guarantee considerations, back-offs to suppliers, and recommendations for acceptable levels of design liability.
  • Keep abreast of latest developments in water and wastewater treatment technologies and equipment, with the ability to translate market developments into effective and competitive solutions.

What do you need?

Already experienced in designing water and wastewater treatment plants, the Senior Designer will provide full ownership and responsibility for delivering engineering design packages, from the concept and optioneering stage through to the outline and detailed design stage, co-ordinating multi-discipline design input and support from third parties where necessary. To be considered for this role you will need:

  • Knowledge and proven experience in designing complex and integrated water and waste water treatment plants, ideally for industrial applications, encompassing aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes.
  • Experienced in producing P&IDs, plant layouts and in selection and sizing of all process equipment typically employed in waste water treatment plants such as tanks, pumps, filters, valves, pipework, instruments.
  • Proven track record for delivering design packages for capital projects, at complex customer sites.
  • Educated to a minimum of Master's degree level, likely to be in chemical or mechanical engineering.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrable with experience and conscious reflection of the benefits and weaknesses of own approach. Able to work effectively within team environments, influencing direction, decisions and actions of the team, and taking responsibility for outcomes.
  • Excellent organisational skills, able to juggle multiple design priorities concurrently and organise support within team to help produce successful tenders and projects.
