Job Title: Import Operations Manager
Overview:An opportunity to lead and develop a European import operations function within a busy freight forwarding environment. This role is focused on driving operational efficiency, service delivery, and commercial performance across road freight imports, while also overseeing an offshore customs processing team.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations Leadership• Manage the day-to-day running of the import department, ensuring smooth workflows and high service standards• Oversee inbound planning, trailer arrivals, and documentation processes• Continuously review and improve operational systems and procedures• Maintain strong communication with clients, hauliers, overseas agents, and internal teams
Commercial & Performance Management• Take ownership of departmental budgets, cost control, and margin performance• Ensure accurate invoicing, reporting, and financial tracking• Identify opportunities to improve profitability through operational efficiencies• Provide regular updates and performance reports to senior leadership
Team Management & Development• Lead, support, and develop the import team, ensuring effective workload distribution• Manage staffing, holidays, and overall team performance• Implement and maintain SOPs, driving consistency and best practice• Promote a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Customs Oversight• Oversee an offshore customs team, ensuring timely and accurate declarations• Provide guidance and support on customs processes, escalating complex issues where needed• Maintain awareness of customs regulations, tariffs, and VAT requirements• Ensure data accuracy and readiness for audits
Coordination & Communication• Act as a central point of contact for operational and customs-related matters• Work closely with internal departments to align on shipment activity• Support wider import and customs functions with administrative and operational tasks
Compliance & Risk Management• Ensure all documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant• Identify and mitigate operational and customs-related risks• Maintain compliance with HMRC requirements and industry standards
Requirements:• Strong experience in import operations within freight forwarding, ideally European road freight• Proven leadership and team management experience• Good understanding of customs processes and regulations• Commercial awareness, including budgets, margins, and cost drivers• Strong organisational and communication skills• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
