Job Description

Maintenance OperativeJob Purpose

We are looking for a reliable and proactive Maintenance Operative to carry out day-to-day maintenance across our homes, services, and grounds. The successful candidate will help ensure our buildings remain safe, well maintained, and fully functional for the young people who live with us and the staff who support them.

Working closely with the Site Maintenance Manager, you will carry out a range of general maintenance duties and assist in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out general maintenance tasks as instructed.

Undertake internal and external painting and decorating.

Assist with cleaning and grounds maintenance tasks where required.

Support the Site Maintenance Manager in ensuring monitoring checks are completed in line with company procedures.

Assist in operating and maintaining heating and hot water systems.

Help maintain the external fabric of the buildings and surrounding areas.

Ensure the safe use, storage, and maintenance of all tools, equipment, and materials.

Identify and report defects or damage promptly to the Site Maintenance Manager.

Contribute to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, residents, staff, and visitors.

Assist in responding to site emergencies when required.

Help maximise the security of the premises.

Carry out additional duties that are reasonably compatible with the role as required.

Person SpecificationKnowledge

Knowledge of basic DIY and maintenance tasks including painting and decorating, joinery, electrical fittings, and plumbing.

Understanding of general health and safety requirements within the workplace.

Skills and Abilities

Reliable with excellent timekeeping and attendance.

Ability to follow schedules and produce high-quality work.

Able to manage multiple tasks within tight timescales.

Ability to carry out basic electrical maintenance (e.g., wiring plugs, changing fuses).

Ability to perform joinery tasks and basic construction repairs.

Ability to complete basic plumbing tasks.

Competent in using a variety of maintenance equipment and materials.

Ability to work effectively in a busy environment while maintaining positive relationships with staff and students.

Ability to follow procedures and contribute ideas for improving systems.

Able to access all areas of the premises, including working at height using ladders where necessary.

Ability to lift and move items in line with health and safety guidelines.

Strong communication skills, including completing reports when required.

Ability to interact professionally with external visitors.

Ability to maintain appropriate levels of confidentiality.

Qualifications

Clean driving licence.

No criminal record relevant to the safety and welfare of others.

Experience

Experience using maintenance equipment and materials safely in environments where care is required to prevent harm to others.

Experience working as part of a team.
