The role
South Hampstead High School is seeking to appoint a dynamic, energetic and inspirational Teacher of English to join our vigorous and high-achieving English Department from September 2026.
You will work with highly motivated and talented pupils from Year 7 to Year 13, delivering well-organised, engaging and challenging lessons that inspires a passion for language and literature in our students.
We are looking for a passionate subject specialist with an enthusiasm for English. Applications are welcome from experienced teachers with a strong track record of success as well as from well-qualified Early Career Teachers or graduates ready to begin their teaching journey in a supportive and ambitious environment.
The English Department
The department is lively, active and highly regarded by both pupils and staff. English is consistently one of the most popular A-Level subjects, with students inspired by advanced literary study. The successful applicant will share responsibility for departmental activities, including creative writing groups and theatre trips, while contributing to pastoral, administrative and extra-curricular life.
The OCR English Literature A-Level provides an exceptional experience, enabling many students to progress to top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. Teachers engage with challenging texts such as the poetry of John Milton, T. S. Eliot, Sylvia Plath, W. H. Auden and Langston Hughes, alongside plays like Hamlet, The Tempest, Edward II, The Duchess of Malfi, Terry Johnson's Hysteria and Danai Gurira's The Convert. For the Contextual and Comparative paper, the department currently offers pathways in American Literature and Women in Literature.
