Job Description

Overview

At Octopus Energy Generation (OEGEN), we are passionate about powering a sustainable future. We invest in people, communities, and a greener tomorrow in the renewable energy space. Since entering renewables in 2010, we have become a top investor in onshore wind in Europe and a major backer of solar power. We manage over £7bn in renewable energy assets worldwide and continue to grow with ventures in energy storage and e-fuels. This position combines flexibility with an expectation of an average of 3 days in the London office.

Team Overview

The Development Portfolio Management Team delivers development investments and works with developers to realise investment cases amid changing market dynamics. The Development Director leads OEGEN's commercial relationships with approximately 6-8 development partners across Europe, spanning maturity from early-stage land to ready-to-build and across five countries. The role aims to make these investments highly successful through development, including exits.

You will lead all commercial, development and legal decisions on this portfolio, drive value maximisation, exit strategies and sale processes, and lead a team of commercial and development managers. You may become a board director on joint ventures and project companies. We are looking for someone who is commercially minded, understands renewables development, loves data, and communicates clearly with the team and senior stakeholders. Fund managers will rely on you to support decision making and value creation for portfolio companies.

What you'll do
  • Commercial Management: Strategic oversight and direct management of approximately 6-8 renewable energy developers and development pipelines, ensuring delivery of investment objectives and progression through development milestones to ready-to-build.
  • Act as the first point of contact with each developer, manage day-to-day coordination and communication, and lead operational reviews of pipelines.
  • Lead on value enhancement and maximisation of each development project, including exit timing, sale preparation, revenue contracting, last-mile development, and other activities to optimise investor returns on exit.
  • Monitor valuation and financial performance of investments to optimise returns and assess portfolio performance against objectives.
  • Identify and mitigate portfolio risks to enhance resilience and performance.
  • Governance Oversight: Implement, maintain, and enhance governance frameworks to ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with senior management and shareholders of portfolio companies and partners to ensure governance practices are well-managed and processes are optimised.
  • Be an active member of operational committees and a board member on joint ventures and portfolio companies.
  • Team Leadership and Support: Lead and motivate a team dedicated to managing the development portfolio, fostering empowerment and continuous improvement.
  • Work closely with OEGEN Fund Managers to deliver the overarching fund objectives.
  • Report against development and investment KPIs internally and to investors.
What you'll need
  • Experience managing and driving strategic initiatives for a portfolio of renewable assets or developers.
  • Strong regulatory, governance, and compliance knowledge with experience across multiple geographical locations.
  • Experience in driving value enhancement and exit strategies for projects.
  • Exceptional commercial acumen with a proven track record in investment portfolio or asset management.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging and influencing diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in financial modelling, project management, data, and reporting.
Benefits and Culture
  • Salary: discussed on request during recruitment calls; flexible to match experience and the right fit.
  • Unique culture with autonomy and ownership; recognised as a top company to work for by external rankings.
  • UK perks hub and employee benefits.
