Role Overview
The Assistant Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial team in managing the financial and contractual aspects of construction projects from procurement through to final account. The role is designed to develop a strong understanding of cost control, subcontractor management, valuations and project profitability while working closely with site teams, suppliers and clients.
This is a development role suited to someone early in their QS career who wants structured exposure to real commercial responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial & Cost Management
- Assist with preparation of project budgets and cost plans
- Monitor project costs and maintain cost value reconciliation (CVR)
- Track variations, delays and additional works
- Support the preparation of monthly cost reports
- Assist in financial forecasting and profit tracking
- Review labour, plant and material costs against budget
Subcontractor Procurement
- Issue enquiries and obtain quotations from subcontractors and suppliers
- Analyse and compare tender returns
- Assist in preparing subcontractor comparisons and recommendations
- Draft and issue subcontract orders
- Maintain approved supplier database
Valuations & Payments
- Assist in preparation of interim valuations and applications for payment
- Measure works completed on site
- Assess subcontractor payment applications
- Prepare payment notices and certificates
- Assist with final accounts and retention release
Contract Administration
- Support management of contracts (typically JCT/NEC)
- Maintain project documentation and change records
- Track and log variations
- Assist with contractual notices and communication
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Degree or HNC/HND in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or similar (or working towards)
