Senior Restorative Justice Practitioner Brent and HMP Wormwood Scrubs We need a confident, determined Senior Practitioner with excellent people skills to join our team and deliver Belong's flagship violence reduction programme in Brent borough, North London. The successful applicant will help to reduce disruption, violence and anti-social behaviour caused by gang activity in Brent, by offering restorative justice interventions, restorative practice support and mentoring to gang nominals and/or to those at risk of gang involvement. Participants will be residing in Brent, or on remand in HMP Wormwood Scrubs. Belong aims that programme participants will: Increase their commitment to live crime free futures Improve their mental and emotional wellbeing Increase engagement in positive activities and relationships The Practitioner will support up to 20 participants at any time, ensuring that they can support and respond to individual's needs adequately. Mentoring will be offered primarily to children and young people at risk of gang involvement, whereas restorative justice and/or restorative practice support will be offered primarily to gang nominals. The Practitioner will carefully balance support and accountability, as well as show neutrality and fairness when engaging with programme participants. Interventions will be culturally aware, with the practitioner employing a strength based, trauma informed, and boundaried approach. Experience of front-line work within the criminal justice sector and a solid understanding of the drivers and realities of gang involvement are crucial for success in this position. Restorative justice facilitator training and experience will be a significant asset. In addition, the successful applicant will be organised, detail-oriented, and possess good IT and communication skills. They will demonstrate a high level of professionalism with the ability to work efficiently and autonomously, and to build relationships across a range of different teams. Working flexibly within Brent Civic Centre and HMP Wormwood Scrubs, the practitioner will work with Brent Council, policing teams and HMP Wormwood Scrubs, to identify and offer interventions to eligible participants. Supervision Received -Instructions received from the Senior Prison Officer on the direction of the Assistant Superintendent and the Deputy Superintendent regarding daily work assignments and shift schedules. 4. Work Complexity -In addition to custodial duties, Prison Officers are called upon to build up and maintain close relationships with those in their charge. This requires Officers to balance discipline with compassion and understanding for those in their charge, along with exercising authority in coping with abusive offenders -The role of a Prison Officer calls for instructing, mentoring, negotiating, counselling and pastoral leadership skills in order to help prepare prisoners to lead useful law abiding lives on release from prison. -Managing prisoners who are limited in literacy and have difficulty following instructions. -Using diplomacy in skilfully assessing situations to avoid unwanted confrontations. -Regularly supervising persons who may be mentally challenged -Regularly dealing with disruptive and abusive prisoners contributes to stressful atmosphere for the Prison Officers. 5. Contacts -Routine daily report logging for management records as well as the provision of detailed reports regarding unusual incidents. -Provision of fair and perspective reports on prisoners to prison management both verbally and written as needed -Frequent contact with prisoners to effect change. This involves issuing of verbal instructions while escorting, supervising, training and maintaining order and discipline. -Verbal exchanges of information with visitors, prisoners' family members, volunteer organizations, Social Welfare Organizations and other external agencies to facilitate the provision and effectiveness of critical pathways to appropriate support, treatment and further assessment. 6. Creativity -Striking a balance between maintaining discipline and order within the Prison Institution, and treating prisoners with dignity, and understanding requires innovation and creativity. -Use diplomacy to get prisoners and co-workers to cooperate and encourage cohesiveness. -Working with different personalities involves some level of creativity. 7.
