Veteran Support Worker

Peer Support Worker Veteran Recovery College Location: County Durham (with some local travel) Salary: £14,196 per annum (dependent on experience) Contract: Part-time, fixed-term 1 year (with potential for extension subject to funding) Reports to: Veteran Recovery College Manager Organisation: Anxious Minds About Anxious Minds Anxious Minds is a registered charity delivering specialist, accredited mental health support to veterans, serving personnel, families, and carers across the North East of England. We are independently accredited through the Quality Network for Veterans Mental Health Services (QNVMHS) and deliver the Veteran Recovery College , an evidence-based, recovery-focused model supporting veterans to improve mental wellbeing, build resilience, and regain purpose. The Role We are seeking a compassionate, motivated Peer Support Worker to join the Veteran Recovery College team in County Durham. This role is central to our recovery model and is ideally suited to someone with lived experience of the Armed Forces and/or mental health recovery who wishes to support others through shared understanding, hope, and empowerment. You will work directly with veterans and their families, providing practical and emotional peer support, co-facilitating recovery courses, and helping individuals engage with services and community resources. Key Responsibilities Provide one-to-one and group peer support to veterans accessing the Recovery College Use lived experience safely and appropriately to inspire hope and support recovery Co-facilitate Recovery College courses, workshops, and wellbeing sessions Support veterans to set goals, develop self-management skills, and build confidence Promote engagement, inclusion, and empowerment within a trauma-informed environment Maintain accurate records in line with data protection and confidentiality requirements Work collaboratively with clinicians, support staff, and partner organisations Uphold safeguarding policies and contribute to a safe, supportive service Person Specification Essential: Lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery and/or experience as a veteran, service leaver, or military family member A strong commitment to recovery-focused and person-centred practice Excellent communication and interpersonal skills Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team Understanding of professional boundaries and confidentiality Willingness to undertake training and supervision Desirable: Experience working or volunteering in peer support, mental health, or community services Knowledge of Armed Forces culture and veteran mental health issues Peer support or mental health qualification (or willingness to work towards one) What We Offer A meaningful role making a real difference to veterans lives Full training, supervision, and ongoing development A supportive, inclusive, and values-driven organisation Opportunities to progress within veteran mental health services Flexible working approaches where possible How to Apply Please submit: A CV A short supporting statement explaining your interest in peer support and how your experience meets the role Applications should be sent to .
