Job Description

Are you passionate about protecting and enhancing biodiversity and the natural environment? Wiltshire Council is seeking a skilled Ecologist to join our Economic Development & Planning team. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping sustainable development across the county.
About the Role

As an Ecologist, you will act as a specialist advisor, providing expert ecological guidance to support the Councils statutory land-use planning function. Youll review planning applications, conduct site inspections, and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and policy. A significant part of your work will involve negotiating with developers and external partners to secure ecological improvements in development schemes.

You will also:

  • Provide technical advice to officers, Members, and the public.
  • Critically review ecological assessments and mitigation plans.
  • Carry out site visits and habitat assessments.
  • Support strategic planning documents and regeneration projects.
  • Represent the Council at planning appeals and hearings.

This role offers flexibility, with work carried out on-site, from home, and across the county.

About You

Were looking for someone with:

  • A degree in ecology or a related subject or at least 3 years professional experience in ecological advice.
  • Strong knowledge of national planning policy and ecological legislation.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Competence in habitat and protected species survey methods and ecological impact assessments.

Desirable:

  • Experience in local government or public sector.
  • Membership of CIEEM.
  • Protected species survey licences.
