Job Description Summary At STEMCELL Technologies, we are developing high-throughput cell sorting technologies for clinical and research applications. We are seeking a Scientist with expertise in microfluidics to lead the design, optimisation, and testing of our MEMS-based sorting chips and fluidic cartridges, built on our patented VACS technology. In this role, you will contribute scientific expertise, deliver experimental and simulation work, and collaborate closely with engineers and scientists across the company. This role is ideal for a postdoctoral researcher or experienced engineer looking to apply their skills in a hands-on, fast-paced commercial environment. Job Description Duties and Responsibilities: Plan and carry out experiments and simulations to support the development and optimisation of our next-generation microfluidic sorting chips and fluidic cartridges. Analyse experimental and simulation data, draw conclusions, and recommend next steps within the scope of assigned work. Use numerical simulation tools (e.g. COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM) to model chip performance and de-risk designs and contribute technical input to chip design, process decisions, and validation activities. Write and run Python scripts for test automation and data analysis. Perform detailed performance analysis, summarise key findings, and present to findings to project teams and stakeholders; may represent the company in technical discussions with external partners, collaborators, or at conferences. Collaborate with external MEMS foundries to specify wafer builds, review process flows, and track fabrication progress. Work closely with internal teams across software, electronics, and biology to ensure smooth integration into the full system. Knowledge and Qualifications: Degree in Physics, Engineering, Microfluidics, MEMS, or a related discipline. The minimum required relevant experience is 2-5 years with a PhD, 4-8 years with a Master's, or 6-10 years with a Bachelor. Strong understanding of fluid dynamics and microfluidic systems, with experience in designing and conducting experiments, analysing data, and interpreting results. Understanding of MEMS fabrication techniques (sputtering, ALD, RIE, DRIE, PECVD, etc.) and ability to contribute to process flow decisions (experience working directly with MEMS or microfluidic chip fabrication is an asset). Proficiency in Python for data analysis and/or test automation with experience using simulation tools (COMSOL, ANSYS, OpenFOAM, or similar). Exposure and familiarity with optical systems (e.g. microscopy, lasers, high-speed imaging) is an asset. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently on assigned tasks with effective verbal and written communication skills. The Crystallisation Scientist is expected to be competent in the underlying science of process and scale-up crystallisation, having experience of crystallisation pathways such as cooling crystallisation, anti-solvent crystallisation etc. at gram and ideally kg scale. The Crystallisation Scientist is expected to be experienced in using controlled lab reactors (CLRs) in conjunction with heater/chiller units and overhead stirrers to manipulate crystallisation systems to optimise: purities, yields, particle size distributions or any other client specific objectives. A working knowledge of current PAT technology is required, such as Blaze metric, FBRM, Raman and others. This is essential to understand and characterise the crystallisation system and MSZW (metastable zone width) for further optimisation and eventually technology transfer. The Crystallisation Scientist is expected to be competent in a wide variety of analyses using an extensive range of different techniques including specialist areas such as - DVS; XRPD; TG/DTA; DSC and more general areas including spectroscopic and wet chemistry methods. About DropCode DropCode is building the data engine for protein function. Starting with enzymes, we use our patented droplet microfluidics platform to capture exponentially more data on protein function than conventional methods, linking genotype to phenotype at per-droplet resolution, making every droplet a micro test tube. This data fuels machine learning models that learn in ever greater detail how sequence determines function. Our wedge is enzyme engineering for biocatalysis and industrial biotechnology, but our ambition is to make DropCode the definitive platform for protein function prediction. We are Cambridge PhDs with deep expertise across microfluidics, biochemistry, machine learning, optics, and engineering. We believe the language of biology is machine learning, and that the fastest path to transformative models is not just better AI, it is better inputs. The Role We are looking for an exceptional computational scientist to lead our machine learning and protein modelling efforts. You will own the sequence-function modelling stack end to end: from processing large-scale functional datasets generated in our microfluidic runs, to training and deploying generative and predictive models that drive the next round of experiments. You will work in a tight loop with the biology and engineering teams, turning quantitative phenotypic data into closed-loop active learning systems that continuously improve our models. This is a foundational role. You will be building the ML infrastructure from the ground up, and your architectural choices will shape DropCode for years.
